All ive heard so far on this is lewis's size lets not forget lewis was ****ing good as well a lot more skill than marciano along with being 6 inches taller and around 4 stone more.
Lewis would easily make short work of Marciano and bomb him out. You have to understand, that although Marciano was a great of his era, fighters were just smaller back then, had worse training, worse nutrition and were just not as good in general as they would become in later eras. Marciano was under 190 pounds and he was how tall? Lewis at 6'5 and 245 pounds would have an overwhelming size advantage. Although Marciano never lost, he was floored quite a few times. Including by 38 years old Joe Walcott and by light heavyweigh Archie Moore. He was also close to losing on cuts to Ezzard Charles. The two fighters who KOed Lewis were around 240 pounds each and probably much harder punchers than Marciano ever was.
I really love Rocky but at 188 he would be a light heavy today with the 24 hour weigh in and weight cutting techniques. He should not be in H2H match ups with 6'5'' 245 pound men.
Why is Wlad wearing a nightie in your avatar? Anyway, I think Marciano's pressuring style and bodyshots would bother Lewis, but there are two clear truths here- 1. Lewis's weight, strength, reach, height, skill, speed and power means that Marciano has no chance of out-pointing him. 2. Marciano's power, though pretty good, is not going to be a very significant factor in my opinion. Tyson and Tua were able to connect with cleaner shots than the rights thrown by Rahman and McCall, but they had no effect on Lewis. Why? Lewis's height sapped their power. There's only so far you can reach at a vertical angle before your power is seriously compromised. Since I don't see Lewis being KO'd with a bodyshot (very rare at heavyweight, and the way Lewis will be looming over Marciano will discourage Rocky from throwing them) and since Marciano can neither outpoint nor KO Lewis, I think Lewis would win by a wide decision. He might knock Marciano down, but I would suspect that Lewis would pace himself and fight cautiously, much as he did against Tua.
Absolutely. Let's not forget: when Lewis wanted to hit and run, he could do it very effectively, especially against shorter opponents.
Lewis by TKO under today's rules in a 12 round fight. Rocky's chances go up if they fought a 15 rounder under the old rules because I do believe Lennox would cut Rocky fairly early and today they'd stop it but in the past they let a lot of those fights go on.
I disagree. Lewis was practically out cold from a single shot from Rahman. Wlad has never been that out of it due to a punch, let alone a single punch. He took something like 4 straight left hands directly on the button from a known powerpuncher in Sanders & he still beat the count every time.
Marciano only fought a few guys over 200lbs. The only decent fighter he fought over 200lbs was a way past his best Joe Louis who was fighting strictly for rent money at that point. I'm not saying he didn't have an iron chin, but I am saying it was never tested in the "Heavyweight Division". He was never hit by a heavyweight by todays standards. Imagine rather then fighting at Heavyweight, Lennox Lewis fought his entire career in the Cruiserweight division :deal I honestly don't think he would have ever lost a round, actually I don't think he would've had a fight last longer than a few rounds at all. You are comparing a great Cruiserweight vs a Great Heavyweight. The Heavyweight wins......every time :good
im a huge marcinao and lewis fan. i rank both Marciano #3 and Lewis #5 in my top 5 as hws. but h2h and in their primes, gotta go with lewis. Not because of his size but because of his skills. His variety of punches and the angles he used were extraordinary. He knew when to hold and lean on his opponent. great jab and i dont buy the chin argument. he took huge power shots against mercer and vitali and came back with his own. Marciano always has a chance though with that punch and heart of his and if lewis got sloppy u never know like he did w/rahman. but something tells me he wouldn't take rocky marciano lightly. now, if u said pre-manny steward, id go with marciano by ko. Lewis tko 13 on cuts. both were great champions and beat every man they ever faced and went out on top of their sport
while lewis will probably win, it will not be a walk in the park. whenever u match up 2 great atg hws, it will never be easy one way or another. marciano couldnt be measured by his physical stats but by his intanglibles which were many. but lewis was a very smart and calculating fighter and steward wasnt an idiot. lewis would be very cautious w/marciano like he was w/tyson. only difference was, marciano would be a live opponent. over 15, lewis paces himself and tries to establish his jab and use his body weight in clinches. lewis would grab marciano everytime he came in and try to keep him at the end of that jab.
wow thanks for all the replies! But one thing that bothers me is that some of the people that posted automaticly think that if you punch another fighter in the face, its a knockout, with Rocky's stance, he could easily reach into Lewis' body and give him a knockout, it dosn't need to be a huge punch to the face I'm still debating who would win, and i might change my mind, you guys gave some good reasons for Lewis beating Rock, and Rock beating Lews....
Under modern rules, the thing I'd be most worried about in Marciano's corner is Lewis's jab ripping up Rocky's face. Knocking out The Rock is one thing, forcing a stoppage due to cuts and swelling is another and I'd be very concerned about that. So if I was coaching Rocky (yeah right) I'd be working overtime on getting the upper-body movement and blocking right because Rocky was too much of a ready bleeder to take jabs from a 245lb man for several rounds without problems. Rocky's workrate and body attack would be the key. Focus on chopping down that big tree on the inside, and attack from underneath. Prediction? Playing the numbers, I think Lewis could use his height and reach to stick 'n' move enough to keep Rocky away for a UD12. But Rocky could hit hard enough to give him a chance of knocking pretty much anyone out, which keeps this a close fight and difficult fight!
