I meant just to stay there and let his body slowly recover. Not necessarily to fight Lewis or Tyson (although Holyfield was a option). We all know he fought Ruiz because he was low hanging fruit. But he came back down to quickly and it destroyed his career. You can't strip all that muscle at that age and expect to be the same. Roy actually came down because he thought Tarver was the "easy" option.
Ok, I get ya. Yeah, he came back down too quickly. How long was it before he fought Tarver the first time??
It was about 6 months i think, which was just ridiculous, should've taken about a year. He was absolutely drained and never recovered. What people miss is Roy was stripping muscle in a short space of time, which is a big no no.
Was there any need for Roy to put that much muscle on? Looking at boxrec it says Roy came in at 193. Am i the only one that think that Roy could probably have weighed in at 180 and still beaten Ruiz?
Possibly, but you've got to remember he had Mackie Shilstone advising him. I don't think putting that much muscle on was the problem, the problem was losing it so quickly. Roy was always wary about facing heavyweights, whilst weighing below 190lbs because of what his dad told him...remember he refused the Buster Douglas fight...It was similar to what Tyson thought about George Foreman because of what Cus had told him...Many people don't know but Tyson actually refused to fight an old Foreman. In that first Tarver fight Roy was a dead man and he still pulled it out, those last two rounds told me everything i needed to know about Roy Jones Jr. he dug deep. It's something people never talk about. He should get huge credit for that win and i think he made a mistake taking the rematch. You can make one mistake but make it twice and you're just stupid IMO. He was depleted physically and his body couldn't stabilize and he should've known that. After he came back to light heavy he developed "sweet spots" really quickly. It's sad because imagine the impression of Roy Jones now had he retired after Ruiz or even the first Tarver fight? He went from being called the GOAT to being ridiculed, quicker then any great fighter.
Nah, Lennox always scoffed at the idea and rightly so. Kind of like how Ray Leonard reacts here, after Larry asks about a possible JC Chavez fight. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElMeISOu9UA[/ame]
I think Roy would've peppered Lennox for a few round and looked a million dollars. Then Lennox would time him and it would only take one shot....Lewis wins this every time, the Ruiz fight was a good achievment, but if you look through history there have been quite a few former Middles who went on to beat Heavyweights of Ruiz's size/ability. The title is a joke, but it's a good win nonetheless. Roy dropped back down to 175lbs too fast, that's why his legs went and why his brilliance was cut to an abrupt end.
I've always wondered if Roy regrets dropping back down to light heavy. After the first tarver fight he must have known he'd killed his body by losing that weight, yet he went on to fight him again and the rest is history. Maybe he wishes he'd stayed at heavyweight, took on a Lewis, got crushed and hung them up right there. At least that way his legacy wouldn't have been so badly tainted in the long run.
He should of stayed at Heavyweight. There were people there he would of beaten before a Lewis match up like Holyfield, Barrett, Brewster, Byrd, Mesi even McCline. A win against one or two of them and a Lewis match would of been massive, and he probably would of had a ton of people picking him.
Depends how seriously Lennox trains. Roy would have a chance against the Lewis who showed up for Rahman I but he gets KOd by the Lennox of Rahman II.
