There's a reason the referee stopped that fight. If it was the other way round, all the Vitali fans would be claiming it as a legitimate win. Plenty of fighters get stopped on cuts and there's never this huge discussion about it still 6 years later. It's because the Vitali fans can't accept the rules of the sport and the fact their man was done. He took a savage beating on that eye and was holding on for dear life after that uppercut in round 6:

    (0:30 seconds in)

Even Hasim Rahman managed to beat the overweight, under prepared version of Lewis, the same version that Vitali fought.

It would have been stopped on cuts a round later anyway.

And Vitali was staggering like a drunk for most of round 6, especially right at the end when he fell on to Lewis and drove them both all over the ring. He would have been finished soon after.

These are two of the most even fighters ever. Both tall, fast, clever etc.

    I have it a draw.

Lennox was spent. In the second part of the 6th round he missed 3-4 big overhand rights and I think he was done as evidenced by the way he slumped on his stool.

He beat him by landing a lucky shot. If Rahman fought that out-of-shape version of Lennox 10 times he'd win exactly once, with that same lucky shot that he can land once in a blue moon.

Lewis was tired, but he would have caused Vitali some permanent damage if the fight had go on. All it would have taken is a uppercut, that made the cut 10x as worse, to finish this fight....

The stoppage was OK, but without the cut Vitali would've won the fight. This is just my opinion. It was a hell of a fight and whoever says that Lenox was totally out of shape is a hater. Lenox may have been not in best shape, right, but he was far from being out of shape.

I don't really get the 'would have been stopped on cuts later' option. How bad should the cuts be before the fight should get stopped?

The doctor didn't just stop the fight with no warning the first time he looked at Vitalis eye, he had been looking at it in between rounds for three rounds before deciding it had become bad enough to stop the fight.

I think the momentum was switching to Lewis in the fight as well. Vitali was ahead and rightly so but Lewis could still have got back into it on the cards. It's all irrelevant anyway as it was a legitimate stoppage in my book.

It would have been stopped by that cut 1 o 2 rounds later anyway, barring cuts then I think it would've gone the distance and one of them would win... lol...

There was no re-match because Lewis balked. Lewis said he would offer a re-match, and had a $15,000,000 + purse lined up for him alone. Vitali wanted the re-match badly. Lewis stuck around hoping Johnson or Sanders would beat VItali. He even helped Sanders a bit, but after he saw the results, he knew his body could not cash that big check, so he retired rather than being stripped of his belt.

As to who would have won if the first fight was not stopped, Lewis never scored a late round stoppage past round 8, was down 2 points by all three judges, and seemed to be gassed at the end of round 6.

I tend to think Vitali wins via late round stoppage.

Who would have won if Vitali hadn't won the 4 rounds he did and Lewis was 6-0 up on the cards and was in better shape?

What if Vitali was gang raped at gunpoint the night before the fight by a gang of Serbian war-criminals?

The fact is he had a cut that the doctor looked at 3 or 4 times before deciding it was bad enough to stop the fight.

Again, how bad should the cut have been before the fight was stopped if it wasn't bad enough already?

Vitali has shown us in his last fight that he has great stamina, 80 punches a round is exceptional from some one so big if there were no cuts he would have gone on to win I feel as Lewis was not in good shape that night but cuts are a fact in the fight game and Vitali was taking some big shots and would have lost half his face if the fight had gone on. But this was the real fight for the title not the fight with Byrd when he quit with an injury, it had to be stopped but maybe we could have seen another couple of rounds. Vitali and his brother have proven themselves to be the best fighters of their time and I now believe they will go down as all time greats.
