So you'd prefer fighters you call inferior robots to legitimate gifted fighters, simply due to personality issues? Your priorities as a fan seem... odd. While I too think he's an assclown, Mayweather at his best was absolutely brilliant to watch, a true master of the sweet science. I gather you also dislike Tyson and Ali (loudmouth braggart clown who constantly called himself the greatest, even when he was at the stage of getting gift decisions)? You know SRR beat his wife? As did SRL? There's just not a lot of cleanskins in combat sports. Or, when you do get a cleanskin who is also a truly great fighter, he's just a salty or arrogant MF every time he's in front of a mic. Just the nature of the sport.
No, I wouldn’t prefer that. I would, & do, prefer gifted fighters who had a modicum of class about them. Doesn’t have to be one or the other, as fighters occasionally show us.
What's your opinion then of Larry Holmes and Lennox Lewis then? Both legitimate ATG's, both lived their personal lives admirably, but both were kind of dicks when you put them in front of a mic (Lewis has improved a bit in old age/retirement, Holmes has only got worse).
Vastly different classes. Lewis was kinda stand-offish, & had a confidence that spilled over only mildly into arrogance, as Champion Boxers go. Holmes by contrast is an insufferable pr£#% & a ceaselessly bitter curmudgeon - he endlessly talks complete rubbish about other legends & unironically, publically stated he was the no. 1 Heavyweight of all-time, based on achievements & ability. He’s a bad joke. Lewis has never been remotely that bad. Credit where it’s due, Holmes is a criminal cleanskin & a great businessman. He’s redemptionless beyond these qualities though, which - while exceptional in Boxing - are very low bars to clear in civilised society.
... and weirdly, Tyson, in old/age retirement, is the exact opposite of Holmes when you get him in front of a mic. Nothing but kind words, respect, and admiration for current fighters and other legends. As champ, one could argue he was a very bad ambassador of the sport (even though he brought in so many fans), but as an old retired champ, he's a great ambassador (unless you've got something against weed). Holmes still talks **** about Tyson to this day; conversely, all Tyson does is praise how great Holmes was, make excuses for Holmes's loss to him. They're weird opposites.
People are complicated. I prefer actions to words, so I have more respect for Holmes than Tyson…but Holmes doesn’t make it easy. He’s unwatchable. My six-year-old would be embarrassed about the logic he uses when discussing the greats. Fantastic remark on a YouTube video I saw recently. Interviewer asks Ali, Holmes, & Frazier how Tyson would’ve done in the ’70’s. Holmes says, “Who?” & proceeds to state how everyone (even Norton) would have not only beaten, but trounced Tyson, & that he’d be unheard of as a fighter had he been around then. Ali can just barely be heard off-camera saying in response to Holmes calling Tyson an easy night, “Speak for yourself.” Comment to the “Who?” remark: “Mike hit Larry so hard he doesn’t remember who Tyson is.”
Great comment. Lol. Speaking of six year olds -- my six year old watched Fury vs. Usyk with me. Totally unprompted by me, during Fury's interview after, she says "he's being a sore loser! Usyk kicked his butt!" When I told her the rematch is on for sure, she said "Oh no, Fury is going to be sore loser again if he loses again". When a six year old girl who is mostly interested in princesses and Roblox calls you out for bad sportsmanship... lol
Lewis was the rougher tougher dude. But Wlad was the cleaner technical fighter with a bigger punch. Lewis would need to get rough early and roll the dice. He needs an early KO - and he might get it. If he tried to box Wlad I think Wlad would end up picking him apart.
50/50 imo Wlad I would say was the better outside boxer between the two; better jab, better left hook, and a better straight, while Lennox was the better on the inside; better uppercut and better overhand right. So it really depends if Wlad can keep Lennox on the outside and neutralize him on the inside he should win either by decision or late knockout. If Lennox can get on the inside and get off his uppercut or overhand right then he should be able to knock out Wlad. Hard to predict what would happen in my opinion.
No one mentions, or no one thinks so, that Lewis has a better chin. Not to mention what would have happened to Wlad if he "went through the punchers" from Mike Weaver to Vitali Klitschko.
Very questionable statement about power. Sanders hurt Vitali a lot more than Lewis ever did with that left hand at the end of the 1st round. Plus Vitali said for the record Sanders was by far the hardest puncher he has ever fought while Lewis was strongest physically among his opponents.
