Vitali had been training to fight on the undercard and Lewis had been in his sights and on his radar for a year.

I met VK in LA when he was preparing for Johnson but all he wanted to talk about was Lewis, that was the fight he wanted, so clearly when the Johnson fight fell thru he got his wishes.

BTW, VK is not a big guy, very tall, yes , big no, he is tall and muscular "skinny".

I was at the fight live Ringside.

I dont buy into that Lewis was out of shape, could he be a little bit better, maybe but out of shape you dont go 6 rounds in a fairly action packed sloppy fight in the trenches.

Lewis exposed VK as a one dimensional arm puncher, relying on one twos while leaning back and build his resume on nothing but washed up has beens or never weres...........he had no answer for the mauling and rough house tactics of Lewis, no inside game or tactical clinching, none, and its not like Lewis fought masterfully, no, he threw a couple of jabs and fell into to maul VK.....but nevertheless he carved him up like a Thanksgiving Turkey.

IMO Lewis should have re matched him and put the final nail into VK but I guess he just could not get up for it anymore.......the drive just was not there and he did beat VK convincingly.

That was PRIME VK against a Lewis who was on the slide for some time, not washed up or shot but clearly past his best by far.................insert instead of prime VK prime Foreman, Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield and Bowe vs that version of Lewis and the torch would have been passed, no doubt, however prime VK could not get it done, that speaks volume about his abilities or talent on the highest level.

Sure for a 10 round match vs a no name. Meanwhile Lewis was ready to go 12 vs Johnson. See the difference?

Vitali was 248lbs for the Lewis fight his optimum weight, for his 2 previous fights that year he had scaled:
    246.75 for Larry Donald
    244.75 for Vaughn Bean
His weight for his last fight before that was 249lbs for Ross Purity.
He had the advantage of youth, condition, and activity having fought twice that year already, whereas Lewis hadn't fought for a year.

I completely agree with you. Vitali was prime and in shape. Lewis was past his best and not in great shape, yet he still managed to beat him. I can only repeat that Vitali is getting too much credit for his performance.

Lewis exposed some flaws in Vitali's defense. That cut was a result of Lewis overhand right. That punch landed because Vitali has a habit of keeping his left hand low and leaning away from the right hand. That does not work against someone with the skills and reach of lewis

Your analysis is on the money. Vital always leaned back away from the punches of his smaller opponents ,Lewis exposed that flaw.

If "prime Foreman, Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield and Bowe" had been in there with Lewis and their face was falling off as well, no, they would not have gotten the job done. Bowe had his chance - against a greenish Lewis, no less - and he opted to drop the belt in the garbage rather than face him. Holyfield and Tyson both got smushed and Lewis wasn't even really in top gear for either.

Vitali put in a great performance against a Lewis that was imo past his best and out of shape, and imo lost because of that hideous gash and nothing else. He was really clobbering Lewis in the earlier rounds. If Lewis had rematched him the only discussion would be about whether a prime Lewis could beat Vitali, because Vitali would have taken care of business in the rematch against THAT version of Lewis. Take it to the bank.

The same as I think Bowe opted out of fighting Lewis because he knew he was going to get malleted, I think Lewis opted out of rematching Vitali because he knew he was going to get malleted.

Wlad put in one of his best performances at age 38 vs Pulev. Who said Wlad was washed up at age 38, or after this fight? NO ONE.

Wlad slowed down at age 39, a few months from 40 vs. Fury.

Lewis like Wlad was a very good over 35 year old fighter. He had plenty left at age 37
