Leo put on an excellent performance last night and uncloaked some boxing skills that many people thought he didn't possess. Mares tried every trick in the book and it didn't work. Big props to Leo and another successful PBC fight card.
That fight was a draw at best. LSC is like the new Margarito. He has one style come forward and throw hands. He has a good chin too. Mares was better all around in my opinion.
Should have been a draw, there were a ton of close rounds. They both were sloppy as hell and didn't look that great.
I was leaning that way for close to half the fight but Leo started pulling away and once Mares had exhausted some of his ability to physically hold Leo, then the rest was a no brainer. Leo was touching him with the sharper and more precise shots. He was turning him off the ropes and catching him with a left hook and right hand. He was pot shoting him in the middle of the ring and his one two combos were on target most of the night. Even when they both engaged, Leo got the best of the encounters. It was Leo's night and he came through like a real champion.
Lsc has a good jab and can fight almost as good from a distance as from the inside. Reminds me abit more of Pwilly's style, volume wise especially, tho he does look like a mini Margarito, who rarely threw any jabs, except against Amenaza Garcia, where Margarito looked like Ray Robinson.
At this point, pretty much. Not retrospectively either, I said this fight doesn't mean much to me prior to it even happening.
Well, if doesn't mean anything to you on a personal level, Before or after, then I can understand that. However on a purely professional level, what do you think about it?
Mares has always been seen as undersized at 126. He's a quality guy, but he lacks power at this weight and gives up size to everyone in the weight class. LSC had quite a few advantages last night.
Mares is the same height as Gary Russel Jr. Last night was only his second loss. He got knocked out by Johnny G, whom Russell knocked out. The way I see it, the only real advantage that Leo had was his skill level.
Russell Jr has some of the fastest hands in boxing, which allows him to neutralize some advantages. It's the same way Pac neutralized a lot of bigger opponents because of his speed. Mares on the other hand doesn't do anything extraordinary. He's just not fast enough to get inside and when he does land, his punches didn't have much effect on Santa Cruz. He relies on his swarming style, but what good is it when all Leo had to do was take a half step back and he's out of range?
