I can only think of a single thread where I've dropped my weight recently and my height was like two posts above that. :huh 5'10½″
Mijares win wasn't B+ or A, it's D or at best C level. (And it's not because Mijares is a bad fighter, but the version that LSC fought certainly is)
Explain yourself. Mijares in his prime was an elite boxer, on most educated pound for pound lists. Granted, he was exiting his prime when Darchinyan mauled him and that was seven years ago - but he actually experienced a bit of a resurgence since then while moving up in weight, looking really strong and sharp. Every loss incurred since Darchinyan with the exception of LSC has been a robbery (Nehomar Cermeño I & II as well as Terrazas) and he pummeled Rafael Marquez into retirement, while blasting out C-level types.
Everyone should boycott the PPV. For the high price they are charging, they should have matched Santa Cruz with Lomachenko, and every other under card match should be a top level match up.
atschWhoops I missed it, I was just blitzing through the Reveco v Ioka RBR thread, and saw the weight thing, somehow I missed the height. I'd just woke up. :dead
Honestly, I can't make any argument other than that I don't really rate these achievements as highly as you do (and some of them I don't even think apply to the version that LSC fought). I disagree with the others on the list as well (particularly Seda) so it most likely comes down to us having varying ideas on what constitutes a C/B or A level fighter.
Hmm I'm Irish but I know the Mexican people would not be happy wit this opponent. I am pretty sure Mexican fans don't care about a star boxer result as long as they show huge cajones. None on display here at the moment.
Nobody says that Santa Cruz is approaching P4P lists, so I really don't see what the big deal is about him not facing top ranked elite opponents. Most title holders don't... Unfortunately in today's boxing, his three fight stretch that included Mijares and Terrazas was enough to bide him some time before facing another tough customer. Just the way it is.
No, but they call him the second or third best in his division (which, on paper, h2h, I would agree that he does seem to be, until proven otherwise). Granted, there is another guy in the mix who is top five in the same division whose opposition in sum is a great deal worse than Santa Cruz's (even lately) - Scott Quigg. ...but the expectations & hype surrounding Quigg, outside a few noisy Brits, has never been even close to what Santa Cruz drew and then fed into with comments like "Rigondeaux is the B side and does nothing for me :tong". If you are going to go tossing around statements like that you damn well better not hide behind Al Haymon's coattails. You're right, he bought himself a bit of goodwill - & time - with his decent run through last March. Anyone being too critical of his opposition from Malinga until Mijares isn't really being fair, considering what realistic choices Santa Cruz had available to him. He earned a "Manny Roman", no doubt. Perhaps even a "Manny Roman and then Jesus Ruiz". Maybe a "Manny Roman and then Jesus Ruiz and then Zsolt Bedak on the biggest PPV of a generation". There would be no amount of brownie points, however, that he could've banked to justify, while actively champion, "Manny Roman and then Jesus Ruiz and then Anthony Settoul". That's just ridiculous.
I'm guessing if you stopped a random person on the avenues of Puy-de-Dôme they wouldn't know Settoul from Nick Sarkozy.
he is a disgrace to the real Mexican warriors who fight anyone anywhere and give it their all, after this constant self-contradiction about Loma, Rigo and Frampton, I will never be a fan, I understand he is a fighter and he is in it for the money as well, but this is ridiculous
Any assessment of LSC HAS to factor in that even when he has faced an opponent with a decent record (such as the above-mentioned Mijares) the opponent (eg Mijares in this case) was hopelessly past his prime, wrong side of 30, and not a real superbantam but a blown up bantam/superfly at best. Size matters. Boxing is divided into weight classes for a reason. Leo has been a huge disappointment - on account of his opponents being 'has beens'!!
