Leon Spinks vs. Marvis Frazier

    Who wins? Both were very good amateurs.

    Frazier went 56-2 before turning pro and beat the likes of Mitch Green, Bonecrusher Smith, and Tim WItherspoon before getting stopped by James Broad in the Olympic trials. He beat Broad as a pro. He also beat Steve Zouski by KO and decisioned Joe Bugner before being stopped by Larry Holmes (LKOby1) for the HW World Title. It was Frazier's 11th pro fight and first loss. He also lost to Tyson in 30 seconds. Between his fights with Holmes and Tyson he beat Bernard Benton, James Tillis, Jose Ribalta, and Bonecrusher Smith... all by decision. 19-2 (8KO) overall and 0-1 in world title fights. His father won a Gold Medal in '64 and is a Hall of Famer.

    Spinks went 178-7 before turning pro and capped off his amateur career with a LHW Gold Medal at the 1976 Olympics. As a pro he drew with Scott LeDoux and decisioned Alfio Righetti before decisioning Ali for the HW World Title. Ali beat him in a rematch, Gerrie Coetzee stopped him inside of 1, and Larry Holmes stopped him inside of 3 rounds. He did stop Alfredo Evangelista KO5 and Bernardo Mercado KO9 between his losses to Coetzee and Holmes. 26-17-3 (14) and 1-3 in world title fights. His brother won a Gold Medal in 1976 and is a Hall of Famer.

    Spinks would be just a 1/2" taller at 6'1'" and they both had 76" reaches. Both men would be about 200 Lbs.

    This seems about as even of a match as we can get. On one hand, Leon had the sort of aggressive early round attack that could have posed a threat for Marvis. But then again I think Frazier was a better boxer, more disciplined, and beat a slightly larger array of better fighters. Not sure who wins, but I'm leaning toward Marvis by a decision.

    Leon was a mess mentally, and with some reason -- read the article in, I'm pretty sure, Sports Illustrated about the Ali II fight when he disappeared from camp and had like four different trainers taking turns talking to him in the corner -- but when he got it all together he was better than Frazier.

    So if we're talking best vs. best, I gotta go with Neon Leon to win by points or possibly late stoppage.

    Frazier was a better all around boxer, Spinks was too inconsistent and self destructive, i think Marvis would take Leon but wouldn't bet on it...

    Both these guy's were B heavyweights so it would be competitive...

    Frazier decision...

    I agree with Saint Pat, that if Leon was at his absolute best, he could outwork Marvis, showing him no fear or respect in the process of beating him up. If we're talking about Leon on a typical night versus Marvis on a typical night, then Marvis would outbox him cleanly.

    The Spinks of Ali I beats any version of Marvin by ud, any other version gets outboxed easily.

    even fight both somewhat frail and susceptible. I lean towards Marvis who was always conditioned to win a Dec

    As with some of you I take the Leon of the first Ali bout when he had one main trainer keeping him toeing the mark with his gym drills. As a side note everything about the return bout in Leon's camp was a bad cartoon.

    Who have u beaten??? Since u want to call two profession fighters bums.
    Seen Marvis in absolute wars with Bert Cooper in the gym. I'll go with Marvis. Better discipline more rounded.
