This was a great 3 way rivalry through the 80s for the most part. And even though they both defeated him(well not including leonards rematch),it seems both had more respect for the hit man than each other. :happy comments?

Marvin Hagler finds it easier to speak graciously about a guy he defeated rather than the man who defeated him.

Holmes and Hagler were both sore losers against Spinks and Leonard respectively. Why? Because they were blue collar fighters who worked their way to the top the hard way. $40-100 paydays and the hunger to prove the doubters wrong. Once they climbed to the top of the mountain then eventually knocked off years later, it was hard to take for them both.

That and both had good reason to think they won their fights.

Holmes was resoundingly beaten in the first Spinks fight. The majority of the world press also favoured SRL.

If it was a majority, it was a slim one. Many experienced boxing people including Hugh McIlvanney, Harry Mullan, Emanual Steward, Eddie Futch, Al Bernstein, Ray Mancini thought hagler won the fight (the list goes on and on if you research the subject). Spinks' win over Holmes the first time didn't generate a fraction of the controversy that Hagler Leonard did, and really has no business being compared to it. Peace.

I'm sure not comparing the two - i gave both their very own wrap. Robbi however brought up a good point and hence the two losses came up. Slim or not the majority did favour SRL as has been proven in here many times.

I swear Bill still thinks Holmes won the first bout. I fully agree he won the second, but the first is Spinks all the way.

Well, ok, but it seemed like a comparison was being made. Perhaps not though, thankfully, as there's no comparison to be made. If a slim majority does exist for Leonard over Hagler, which I'm inclined to believe it does, its probably because as we get amongst the more casual observers/writers of the sport they are more likely to be influenced by flash and speed rather then steady, plodding work.

Leonard and Hagler were two hugely arrogant champions. Hearns was probably the most gracioius boxer I have ever seen in defeat. Pretty easy to have respect for him I would have thought.

I'm betting that's what it is. In real life I have heard many complaints contrary to the official decision-robbery. That is and always been the general feeling towards the decision.

Yes, I agree. Many people favor the quick 30 second flashy bursts of punches over the 2:30 of steady work. I personally score for the steady work rate over the bursts.

Hagler isn't half as arrogant as some in the game.

Yeah. I think some people take the fighters mentality as arrogance or bitterness, when it's really not at all.
