Classic boxing tonight on Versus: Sugar Ray Leonard's title winning effort against Wilfred Benitez. I think they'll probably show the Hagler-Antuofermo I fight as well, considering that was also on the undercard. :yep Good stuff.
I would have to agree. Good fight, too. If I remember correctly, the pre-fight staredown was classic.
I watched it on Leonard's Ringside episode. That was three hours well spent, I didn't know much anything about Leonard till then.
Glad Arum & the other "guy" explained the betting controversy when fight was stopped with 6 seconds left (i.e, going the distance vs ending early). Leoanrd was involved in several "strange" fights during his career. The Announcer also said Ray was rated the #2 Challenger, wonder who was #1 (maybe Cuevas the "other champ" who Leonard avoided)?
Bingo!! You beat me to it. That's my favorite staredown of all time. Benitez was slightly shorter than Leonard, so he tilts his head back slightly so he looks down on Leonard. Benitez was the only fighter whose brand of arrogance I actually liked. It had some style and was slightly exxagerated, like he was playing an arrogant boxer in a movie or something. He was a great, gifted fighter, but when he lost his gift of defensive radar, he had nothing else to fall back on. Leonard-Benitez was a great fight, although suited to the taste for those who like master boxers and cleverness. Leonard had the edge in speed and power, but I still think that Benitez was the better boxer. Again, the staredown is worth tuning in for in itself.
Not on the scale of a Terry Norris but awesome to any leonard fan I'm sure. They like any Ray leonard fight.
Says a Hector Camacho fan :rofl:rofl:rofl Some ringside observers say when Rosario staggered Heccy that first time they saw his heart go flying out of the ring :yep Many would agree.
