Considering the fight was garbage any way one looks at it, I'd say it wasn't overlooked as much as it is avoided.
**** fight. Anyone that considers this as leonard beating duran 2-1 must also side with roosters opinions on leonard-norris,not a pretty thought..... The real roberto won their classic battle in 1980 12 pounds above his normal weight after dominating the lightweights for several years. For this reason and his past peak exploits duran is above leonard p4p and the best of the others of the fab four p4p by some way....
For those of you that have seen the fight, you didn't miss much. I think Mr. Bill most accurately described it as a 12 round sparring session.
I remember watching it live. It was very cold in the stadium and that affected the fighters. Leonard boxed at a distance and won most of the rounds. Duran landed a big right late in the fight that cut Leonard, but it was too late and Leonard won a lopsided decision.
Boxing is better off that ever. Duran, old version Leonard, old version Hagler etc...that stuff, was that basically a bunch of bollocks? By this time Duran had been hammered by Kirkland Laing. Following this was that Duran, Hagler and Leonard **** one massive circle jerk (even worse that the Mosley - Cotto thing)? It is a shame such sequences of fights are looked back upon as being legendary. The likes of Hopkins and Kessler would have put such fighters in their place. Such bollocks could never happen today.
