I personally think that Duran quite because of SRL's antics in the 7th round. Baring that I think he would have stayed to the end, but he thought that if the end meant 7 more rounds of being humiliated, he wasn't going to be part of the show. A things turned out, and why SRL is still haunted by the fight, is Duran quiting took away most of the satisfaction of SRL's victory. The funny thing is SRL did everything he could to have every conceivable advantage in the rematch because he wanted to win and when he knew Duran wasn't the same as he was 6 months ago, which was what he was hoping for, instead of just fighting for a victory he decided to taunt Duran, and Duran then decided to quit. I also think Duran's gotten over it by redeeming himself afterwards, so to this day, it seems like it's Leonard that has more of a problem with it than Duran.
Leonard dealt with it as well....lots of Coke and Alcohol!!! I'm still not over Leonard not giving Benitez a rematch..... Benitez used to show up at Leonard's fights and call him a chicken during his post fight interview!!! I don't sympathize with Leonard not one second!!!
Me either, but then again I don't sympathize with either of them. That said there was no reason for SRL to do what he did. He could have simply won the fight, he didn't need to try and humiliate a proud man like Duran, who felt that the cards were already stacked against him, because he wasn't in the shape he would have liked to have been in. Truthfully I think Duran would sooner have been KO'd than humiliated. SRL was not known for giving rematches when he won fights, and the biggest problem I have with him as a fighter was he used his marketing power to dictate terms to virtually every fight he fought. He even forced Donny Lalonde, a light heavyweight, to fight at 168 for his lightweight title. As for Benitez, Hagler, Duran and others, I'm actually surprised they didn't have rematch clauses in their contracts, guess they didn't have the negotiating power to demand one.
Duran showed he had NO HEART at least in that fight and was not as TOUGH as people claimed him to be.. Yes he was tough, but mentally he showed his weakness and forever will be remembered for NO MAS :bbb
I agree. And least we forget, I think the Panamanian flag should have a picture of Duran on it with the words "No Mas" written under his name.
:rofl Personally I don't even have an issue with Duran, yes he was great, but one of the most over rated fighters in history, had several losses, some to bums plus the quitting..It's more of his fans that over rate him like he is a God As far as the weight, well a professional fighter has to do what he needs to do,hell he got what 8 MILLION, that's motivation enough, plus he beat the p4p King at the time 5 months earlier?? Bradly blew up and did what he had to do to lose weight, just ALOT of EXCUSES from Duran and his fans..
I agree. A loss is a loss is a loss. Although what it may prove at any given time may be up for dispute, cause, I for one don't think Trevor Berbick is better than Ali, but there might be some Berbick supports who do, after all, he did beat him. Then of course Ali came up with that lame Parkinson excuss.
They had the negotiating power....just not the smarts....they always left decisions in management's hands!!!!
Same thing. Pretty much every professional athlete has manager or player reps or whatever, who are suppose to negotiate on their behalf with the same type of people on the other side of the table.
I was never a Leonard fan, after watching the no mas movie (good flick) he's. Still an egomaniac, he lost the rematch with Hearns but the judges gave it to him, then they did the same **** in the Hagler fight, it's almost like winning the gold medal guarantees you the benefit of the doubt.. I was elated when Camacho knocked him out in 1997..
Benitez had a rematch clause -- he took a $1 million buyout to not fight Leonard. So I don't have any sympathy for him.
Yes I'm aware of it but he taunted him for a few seconds, while it looked like Leonard was on his way to taunting him for the remainder of the fight. Btw, I'm not defending Duran, I'm just guessing as to why he quite, and you can't tell me that this documentary wasn't done on SRL's behalf, and through out the documentary it seems clear that the more troubled of the two as a result of the way the fight ended was SRL, not Duran.
He taunted him in the 7th round. Duran quit in the final seconds of the 8th. I fail to see the connection. I don't think ESPN did a domumentary "on Leonard's behalf." They had more access (i.e. more camera time) with Leonard because he's in the U.S. They flew him down for the in-ring "face off" for dramatic purposes. As for who is more disturbed, look at Duran's eyes all over the place as he offers his explanation for why he quit. It's clear he can't look Leonard in the eye, everything about his body language says "I am lying." If he's at peace with it, he wouldn't have that kind of body language. I'd say both have been disturbed about it since it happened, as have, obviously, all true boxing fans.
best post on the matter i've seen yet. i'll just add.... leonard, dundee, mike trainer etc...all knew that duran was celebrating and had a tendency to balloon up after fights. their whole strategy was to force duran into a fight he didn't have time to prepare for. leonard himself has bragged about this in the past. dundee admitted it openly in a few interviews. i believe it was legendary nights where it was all stated. in addition to that strategy...duran's manager eleta said himself he forced duran into that fight to teach him a lesson because he felt duran wasn't listening to him anymore. duran wanted to postpone the fight because he knew he wasn't going to be in prime shape. eleta told him it wasn't possible and that legal action would follow. eleta hung him out to dry. duran knew this. mike trainer..leonards manager and attorney even says in the documentary that duran was 10lbs over weight the night before the fight. so all this talk about leonard not knowing why he quit...or the public not knowing why he quit is pure bull****. duran wasn't going to give leonard the satisfaction of stopping him legitimately. he quit and took that opportunity away. leonard celebrated as if it were some amazing accomplishment but the truth is that whole fight went exactly as it was orchestrated. howard cosell is the one that said 'no mas' not duran. i found it funny that during the film when duran was allowed to speak...they over dubbed what he was saying with leonards bull****. leonard is the one that is hiding something and holding on to something. this whole thing was made to tell his side of the story. with duran's movie coming out soon...it's an attempt to discredit the duran story and capture some glory for himself. in my eyes...that didn't happen. the documentary is bull****, much the same way the second fight was bull****. they were all reading from a script and duran decided to write his own by quitting. good for him.
