:bowdown............... Yep, thats it:deal I'll make no excuses or apologies as to my obtuse remarks & statements i post in reply to some posters on here regarding this subject whose knowledge & expereance of life are limited to say the least which explains their total ignorance about boxing & life in general & to the select few who are old enough too know better & have issue's with the above statement then you really are a bunch of no nothing/done nothing/been no-where man/cuckolded.............wankers:yep With regard to the Laing fight, i remember coming in one saturday afternoon & had just missed the delayed highlights, i did'nt now it was on but the ITV channel in England showed it & as i came through the door my mother & uncle's who are all SCOTTISH came rushing out of the lounge with my sister laughing & jumping about......whats up i said? Mum ran up to me a whacked me in the guts & grinned that great english weee ****** has just beat that fat greazzieee pig & my uncle's pore'd it on by saying that it proves that the best thing that came out of England was a blackman & the best thing that came into it was a scotsman..... I'd never seen them look so happy & that really ****ed up my day totally:| When i flew over to vegas in 89 for the 3rd fight there was about 4/500 that went & i asked most of them how long had they followed Duran & i was amazed that the majority i asked all said after they'd saw him fight Hagler in 83 as it was shown on the following monday......i was aghast, but they all thought that he was brilliant in the fact that he took on the challenge & fought a great fight ending with that all to famous stance & glare at Hagler when the final bell went & that he walked over to Hagler & waved his hand in his face dismissing him saying you're no great champ. As we all know & new back then that Hagler was indeed the monster supreame & common concensus was Duran had absolutly no chance, but the way he performed & at his age after a previous lousy 18 months up to Cuevas.....well! who would have believed it that he'd be in the ring with the almighty Hagler & as MR BILL says, lost it by a **** hair What a mind bending memory that must be from 16 june 83 MSG.......the atmosphere even on the telly was incredible, jeezus i'd love to listen to the yank commentary of that fight as i've only heard the English commentrry which is covered by a die hard Leonard fan & he never really conveyed what i thought was the atmosphere of the night. But the noise inside must have been ear shattering I envy you in the best possive sense of the word:good This content is protected Uploaded with ImageShack.us
That is when I started watching. So much for your you can tell thing. I don't go to boxrec. I saw the fights and know them in my head and follow my instinct. Duran had plodding feet and fought well/great on the inside if a guy fought him there. He did not fight a real great who utilized a great style until he fought Leonard. Saying Duran would knock out Hearns because he beat Bizarro and Viruet and Lampkin is ridiculous. He did not knock out another great fighter ever.
What is the best determinate in regards to boxing skills decline? Is it age, number of fights, or inactivity? Duran had fought in 71 fights prior to boxing Leonard. Leonard only fought 40 in his entire career. Most fighters have had it by 70 fights.
True, still a very bad loss though. Camacho was smaller and weaker and not in his prime either (a lot closer than Leonard though). Can you picture and light hitting BW ever KOing Duran?, I cannot.
In a nutshell Duran did something fantastic post Hearns showing he still had something. He looked $1 000 000 vs Barkley. SRL by contrast did nothing overly incredibe in the above two bouts nor in the two before vs Hearns and Duran. Tho Ray totally schooled Duran in his fight right after Barkley Duran hadn't been able to handle slick boxers for eons so the result was not as good as it looked on paper for Leonard. Leonard - Camacho doesn't even deserve recognition.
Duran never could handle a great slick boxer. At lightweight he did not have a great slick boxer to fight. Had Whitaker been at lightweight when Duran was there, Whitaker would have won a lopsided decision.
What about Ken, Lamkin, Marcel, Leonard etc... were they not slick? Sweet Pea has a good chance to beat Duran, in a close bout. No schooling though.
