Sometimes we forget just how good these guys are. Have a look at the speed and power of the first left hook to the body. Often we can get a more realistic feel for the power and speed in sparring footage with no crowd noise etc. The second just demolishes him. Yes it's vs an amateur boxer but he's quite big and half decent. Leonard, not massively known for his body punching can obviously dish it to the body HARD. These guys are in such great shape and even your average pro is tough as nails. Picture the punishment Leonard and Duran put on each other in that first fight. Yes Duran dished out more, particularly to the body but Ray got in his licks as well that's for sure. This content is protected
Leonard was definitely not going to be one uped so to say. Behind that smile Leonard was always switched on..all business and will not be upstaged even if it's for a bit of a show. Leonard had a vicious mean streak in him and I really liked that about him. I would have preferred he did away with alot of his fakeness and embrace the nastier side a bit more but I guess that would have run contrary to his image. Make no mistake though Leonard was a nasty individual in that ring who always went for the KO IMO. Great fighter
I agree .. And I also think he really had a lot more to offer and give the sport of boxing. And I think him watching from the crowd how Duran, Hearns, and Hagler just kept fighting and fighting for so long and still being successful that it ultimately got to Ray. And he wanted the 5 titles because Hearns had them so he arranged the Lalonde fiasco. It's like he wanted the titles but he didn't want to put in the work … Anyway, one of the very best but just didn't ultimately have enough fights for me...
Right...his resume is stacked no doubt about that. I dont know if it was the eye issues or if he did lose interest but those layoffs did effect his body more than they should have. Reason I say that is because Ray wasnt solely a reflex fighter like a RJJ. Ray had his skills mastered but he really lost alot with each comeback. I'll assume the bad habits he had robbed him of some peak fighting yrs. I definitely would have liked to have seen more of a prime Ray but the resume does speak for itself.
I watched Manny Steward talk about Ray Leonard as an amateur boxer. What he described was a totally different fighter than he was as a pro. He described Ray as a Joe Frazier type of inside, pressure puncher, body puncher, excellent power. Aggressive at all times. IDK If he had hand issues or why he changed so much from that.
Excellent points. For all the glam and glitter he absolutely had that killer instinct in there, and then some.
Vicious hooks those. There's also that instant at a radio station or where it was when someone (an actor) wants to spar Leonard, long after he had retired, and sugar puts him down with a quick combo to the body. Guys who have been at that level will be a different breed to a normal person their whole life.
Hi mate, it was Danny Bonaduce who SRL dropped with a few body punches. Ray always had a mean streak like most great fighters. Cheers.
All business .. ever see this .. a north of fifty Ray Leonard being interviewed by Danny Bonaduche, the ass himself, and Danny keeps asking ray to spar till Ray agrees .. my favorite part is Ray never even took off his hat .. This content is protected
