"Leonard-Hearns 1" of '81 is the best title fight ever at 147?

    Folks,

I was a freshman in high school in 1981 as Leonard was doing the tango with Hearns in Las Vegas. Okay, yes, rds 1 thru 5 were tactical rounds and so-so at best, but come the 6th round, the fight was on..

I've seen some great welterweight title fights over the years, but "Leonard-Hearns" of '81 is still my favorite fight at 147 pounds ever..

The hype and media coverage was insane for boxing at a lighter weight than ever before in 1981...

I was backing SRL all the way, but Hearns had me going all the way till the end...

I do not fault referee Davey Pearl for halting the fight in round 14 when he did. Hearns' goose was well done by that juncture.. Ray was gonna park Tommy had it (The Fight) continued...

    Duran-Leonard was much better.

And so was De La Hoya -Mosley to name a couple.

The first SRL-Hearns fight is very overrated IMO.

Gavilan-Basilio is up there. Also Berto-Ortiz was incredible. If punch for punch Leonard and Hearns followed Berto-Ortiz then it would be the greatest fight at welterweight ever.

Agreed. Great fight nonetheless, however if it where two different fighters in the ring, it wouldn't get the love it does now.

Robinson-Gavilan II is up there. A 15 round action packed bout with Robinson pulling away in the second half of of the fight.

Better than the latter choice but yeah, a great bout but not one of the greatest. I'll also take The Brawl In Montreal as the better fight.

In terms of action, I really like the Basilio-Demarco fights.

There have been better sustained,action-packed fights, but sometimes a tense, tactical affair with only the odd shifts in momentum and sudden bursts can be very exciting.I can only imagine how exciting it must have been to have watched this live, having witnessed the build up,knowing the credentials and quality of the two men in the ring.

When all things are considered,it's the single greatest sporting event that there's even been. And one of the biggest reasons Sugar Ray Leonard is generally considered the greatest athlete of the 20th century.
