As stated, Leonard creeps out another generation with his look at me megalomania. Instead of just saying something nice about the great Hagler, Leonard goes skincrawling smarmy and says he would gladly let Marvin have their victory if it would bring Marvin back. Makes your skin crawl. It's all about Ray for Ray. This is why normal fans find him to be like the creepy uncle. A neverending life of pure narcissism by a man/child obviously unhappy with his status in the boxing history. Hey, we saw through you a long time ago Ray. Insincere, phony. Go back under the rock you climbed out from.
It is a passive aggressiveness in Sugar Ray Leonard's demeanor to disrespect a great middleweight champion like Marvelous Marvin Hagler. Leonard could never in a million years reach the heights of Marvelous Marvin.
Not according to the many experts whom Boxing Illustrated polled at the end of the 80s. Marvin won fighter of the decade quite handily in that poll. I would rank Marvin's body of work in the 70s higher than Ray's too; given Marvin's long streak fighting and, for the most part, beating the other contenders - a run which I rank even more highly than Ray's climb to the title which was quite impressive, too. But Marvin did it on the road and didn't have the help that was afforded to a popular Olympic gold medallist. And I just think his opposition was a notch or two higher. I also rank Marvin's body of work in the 90s as better than Ray's insofar as he stayed retired rather than losing two ill-advised comeback fights (I'm not counting Indio 2). Those two defeats don't tarnish Ray's legacy or what he achieved in his prime. For a brief time his star burned brighter and he earned the right to be mentioned alongside Marvin but in no way, imo, did he surpass him.
Leonards initial tweet about the King's death seemed oddly detached. Rays an ATG and a reformed character one helluva champion but I do beleive Marvin would've hurt him very badly in 1982 or 1984/5 when the fights were supposed to take place...I also think if Ray had taken a fight with Tommy hearns in late summer 1987 he would likely have been flattened. He should at the very least have done the decent thing and given Marvin an immediate rematch.
Leonard always makes everything about himself. A true narcissist. I would expect he’d make this about himself.
Leonard will always be one of those guys you either love or hate. For his haters, the man can’t say anything they approve of. Years ago he openly admitted that Hearns deserved the win in their rematch and they even gave him shlt for that
Ray: Gone too soon. One of the greats. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. OP: WHAT A SCUMBAG!!! WANTS TO MAKE IT ALL ABOUT HIMSELF!!! Sounds to me like OP is the one making it all about Ray instead of paying respects.
By 'boxing experts' do you mean a bunch of journalists who never laced on a pair of gloves a day in their lives? I will concede that Leonard was inactive for long stretches throughput the 80s, so it's well within reason to name Hagler over Leonard as fighter of the decade 1980s, but by and large I would rank Hagler a solid step below Leonard... And to be fair it's a bit like comparing apples to oranges. Hagler was the long reigning master of one division, whereas Leonard was a conqueror of several divisions. Both were great champions and warriors..no need to disparage one to uplift the other
