Just watched the fight and scored it and had leonard winning 117-115. I know a lot of people thought hagler won. How did you have it??
First time ive watched it in full today. Ive always hears how hagler got robbed but cant see how you could think that. What was the reaction from fans/media at The time?
Hagler hadn't fought in a year, whereas Leonard engaged in several real fights behind closed doors in preparation. Leonard obtained several conditions which would be crucial to his strategy: a large ring (24x24ft), 12oz gloves and the fight was to be over 12 - not 15 - rounds. Despite all that, I had Hagler winning by 2 points. He actually outboxed Leonard and landed the harder shots. It was one of those decisions where the judges knew that the public wanted Leonard to win. Ray was the face of boxing, a likable guy, etc.
One thing that I think is insane is that most people scored the last round for Leonard. Ray was literally running away for much of the round, which automatically should make a judge score it for Hagler.
Back then the majority of boxing scribes had begun too see through the Leonard charade & were hoping that he'd get a serious beating, he was'nt actually that popular among main stream fight fans but he appealed to the masses on par with the michael jackson high profile casual fan. It was alot to do with the bogus retirements & his manipulation of the sport as a whole which really manifested itself in spades when Leonard was allowed to fight for LaLonde's Lt/heavy crown along with the inaugarel Super/Middle belt all providing of course that LaLonde agreed to Leonards catchweight contract stipulations of be fined $1MILLION for every LB over. He avoided fighting Hagler for 5 years & would'nt rematch Hearns for 8 or Duran for another 9 when opportunity was there back in 83/84. I'am a big Hagler fan but i've not an ounce of sympathy for Marvin as he should have told Leonard to go **** himself just like the way Leonard humiliated Hagler back in 82 when Leonard called a big conference which we all thought along with Hagler was to announce the superfight but Leonard stunned everyone by saying i'am retiring for good. Hagler had absolutly nothing to gain from this fight in 87 but he sold his arse out for Leonards $$$$. Hagler lost this fight between his own ears. I watched this fight again 3 weeks ago after 10 pints of becks & munching a kebab & as much as i hate that charlatan Leonard he won the fight convincingly albeit due to Haglers stupidity in the first 3/4 rounds coming out orthodox & attempting to box Leonard & allowing the fight pace & stratergy to be dictated by Leonard along with the usual showbiz crowd whooping & howling for Leonard. But rounds are rounds & Leonard banked them early thanks to Marv's generosity & an imbecile corner who really had not a clue about stratergy. I've always had it close in the past & a draw a few times but the last time i just sat & watched it with brit commentary which is good because they did'nt say much so leaving it for your eyes only & Hagler blew it, simple as, gave away to many stupid early rounds & Leonard's punches may have been pitter/patter bull**** but it was choragraphed down to the last second of the round for eye catching appeal. The casual no **** all about boxing fan where all on the Leonard bandwaggan along with the governing bodies & promoters who now where going to make a pile of $$$$. The media were split about leonard & Hagler & more so enraged that Hagler blew a fight that he should have made certain he won in the first 6 rounds by jumping on Leonard & beating the **** to a pulp........ But as a vegas cab driver said to me 20+ years ago, who best for Vegas wins in Vegas:deal
Had it for Leonard 115-113...Very CLOSE fight but IMO Leonard's jab and more persistant combinations during the fight edged it in his favor...Hagler closed it strong though...
