Jones has the physical advantages, but not the intangibles. He'd still beat Leonard at 160 based primarily on that, but Leonard's adaptability and effectiveness at 160 was still top notch. He looked very good against Hagler, as good as he could've at any stage given the styles. TKO4 is simply not going to happen. You act as if Leonard proved he had no place at 160 and was far too small to cope with any top notch fighter. Not the case.
Hard question but my inclination goes around this idea... Jones it's naturally bigger and I believe this could play a big part in that fight.
Size plays a role but age even more. Leonard was still good enough to fight and beat some of the older and slower fighters but, similar to B-Hop now, he would have problems with the younger, faster and busier fighters. I never thought Leonard looked good against Hagler - and neither did Hagler - and I never thought this was a very good fight.
naturally bigger but not quite prime Jones against clearly past his best Leonard. Jones, by decision, and yes in a close fight. Writing off Leonard completely is a mistake.
I'm a big Leonard fan but Jones is just too big and was closer to his prime when he fought Hopkins than Leonard was when he fought Hagler. Easy pick TBH.
Leonard wins on Point's. (Or Late K.O.) No way Jones Jr's boring style can win a decision against an aggresive SRL. (And This content is protected Jones ain't knocking out Leonard.) Which is what SRL will have to be against the very passive, submissive afraid of contact RJJ.
I don't think matchup is a dream matchup, the weight disparity and experience levels/timelines are just all screwed up. But if you want Ray of the Hagler v Jones of the hopkins fight. Then I pic Jones, youthfull speed and reflexes I think in this case gives jones the edge. I Really do think they are too many divisions apart, at their best to match them, if in that context Jones wins easily. Didn't see that me and gazoc agree
While Jones was known to be reserved with his power a lot of the time, especially at light-heavyweight, he was a puncher at 160 and 168 who went for the kill. When Jones really opened up on his opponents ruthlessly he could be rather devastating. Sosa, Hill, Griffin, etc. Those fighters were physically stronger and arguably as durable as Leonard. Sosa came into the Jones fight with a reputation as having a concrete chin and was floored during the second round. If memory serves me correctly, Hill had never been stopped either. If Jones and Leonard went all guns blazing from the opening bell then it's far from ridiculous to suggest Leonard gets put away inside 4. But it's more to do with styles, so I see your point.
I was not a real big fan of SRL, but I think it would be close. Jones would win by SD. SRL experience is a big factor over Jones inexperience at 160. It would not be a boring fight at all. Maybe SRL could get dropped late, but that is a big maybe.
You act like Hagler being 'past his prime' in the way that he was makes him a non entity. Hagler was still a beat even if slightely deminished..Leonard beating him is still therfore a feat of significance.
This is very reasonable. I agree Jones would take the decision but they act like Leonard was complete ****. Jones went to the decision with lesser fighters than Leonard.
