So can somebody clear this up for me and tell me if i'm right- Leonard never ducked pryor, and they were never in the same weight class at the same time for a fight to ever happen. I've run into a few Pryor fans that try to tell me otherwise and use sparring myths and Legendary nights as evidence
Only Leonard haters come up with this crap, and it's completely baseless. Leonard fights bigger names (not to mention physically bigger, stronger, harder-hitting guys) in Duran and Hearns, but he's afraid of a natural lightweight? THAT'S gonna spook him? Yeah, okay. Whatever. Pryor was simply around at the wrong time. Had there been no Duran or Hearns to occupy his time and fill his bank account, Leonard would surely have fought him.
here are some of the idiotic comments and accusations that I'm talking about "The fight didn't happen because Ray was scared of Aaron. Watch the Legendary Nights Documentary yourself, and Norris's speed gave Ray problems as did Hearns. Not to mention he'd be like Hagler on fast-forward with the same aggression and pressure of Duran. and 147lb. nothing, Aaron fought at 147 3 or 4 times in his career and still kicked ass and that was while he was using coke. Ray was scared of him, he'd put a L on his record before he got the big name fights, and he knew it." "Pryor was a legit 140lb. contender he called out Sugar Ray plenty of times, check out my highlight for proof of that, but Ray instead jumped to 147lb. instead to avoid Pryor - there's no other case for it. Pryor whupped his ass in sparring twice. Did you see the problems a slower, less aggressive Duran gave Leonard? Pryor is ten times the pressure fighter and aggressor that Duran was, also much more suited at welterweight."
By the way, found this. Quite interesting. Pity the fight didn't happen. This content is protected This content is protected
I saw a youtube video where pryor walked up to Leonard asking for a fight and was flatly denied There is no excuse for what happened and can only mean Sugar feared him. I always thought a high energy guy like Pryor had the style to overwhelm Sugar
Any version of Leonard from his fights with Benitez of '79 to his KO over Finch in 1982 would KO Aaron Pryor from that same time period....... Leonard KO 4 Pryor..... Facit is, Ray ain't gonna drop down to 140 and Pryor never proved **** on a paper plate at 147...... MR.BILL
Amusing to think of Ray Leonard being "afraid" of anyone. His ego was too gargantuan for him to regard anyone with that much respect. He wasn't afraid of Hagler, why a little rugrat like Aaron Pryor? Nice try, though.
Pryor wanted to move up and challenge Leonard at 147. Leonard never took it that seriously as he was fighting guys like Duran, Benitez and Hearns ... A pryor match would have had some decent hype but Aaron would have been destroyed early ... he wanted the money of course but seriously, Ray scared ? No.
Leonard was terrified of The Hawk He was terrified of all the best challengers, which was a shame as he was an amazing fighter But just as a prime Hagler would have destroyed him, a prime Hawk would have given him one of the greatest fights of all time
Pryor would look pudgy and slowed at 147 in 1981 or 1982....... Plus, Pryor was reckless and wild in his attack.... Leonard's precision punching and WW power would be too much for Pryor....... Ray KO's Aaron in 4 rds..... A.P. goes home with a loss and a fat check.... MR.BILL
And had he met Hearns before he fast grew out of 147, Pryor gets KTFO in the first round. The Hearns he boasted of beating in the amateurs was comically anemic and hadnt even begun to harness his unbelievable punch.
