Not to be confused with Mexican super featherweight Leonardo Isaac "Pac-Man" Sánchez Torres, nor with Mexican-American welterweight Alan Leonardo Sánchez Rivera. The latter I've always had a soft spot for but Alan Sánchez has been around since 2009 and is a gatekeeper at best. On the other hand Pac-Man Sánchez straight up sucks. Anyway, this Leo Sánchez, the Venezuelan one, is 28 years old with an official record of 18-1-1 (13). It should be 19-0-1, as he was robbed against Khuseyn Baysangurov in January. Having seen Sánchez in action thrice now - against countryman Jeremy Álvarez, aforementioned Baysangurov, and tonight destroying Mexican southpaw Eduardo Rangel in 3 rounds - I'm convinced the switch-hitting boxer-puncher is poised to contend. Granted, welter is top-loaded with some intimidating unbeaten talents: Jaron Ennis, Devin Haney, Brian Norman Jr., Rohan Polanco, Lewis Crocker, and Raúl Curiel. All of those guys are still in their twenties, however - so by the time Leo works his way up the rankings some or all of them could conceivably have moved up to 154lbs. He is currently ranked #13 by the WBA in their "FedeLatin" rankings. He'll need to finish climbing that ladder before appearing in their world top 15. Sitting on top of that pile is currently Boots Ennis as super champion (unified with the IBF) - and Rolly Romero, "regular" champ. The latter is definitely not unbeatable for Sánchez - but the question is how long he will be holding onto his belt.
p4p Leo Sánchez rankings: Venezuelan welterweight, aka "Hollywood" Californian featherweight, aka "Bazooka" Californian welterweight (Alan L. Sánchez...would be #1 or 2 if this was 9-10 years ago in his prime) Mexican super featherweight, aka "Pac-Man"
