Teddy Atlas almost did. In fact he was planning to kill him. But that was some time later, I think, after the fight, a dispute over money.
I think the story (told by Teddy in his memoir) was that he was made that LaLonde dropped him shortly before his career-high payday and so went to his apartment with a gun. Can't remember if Teddy's story is that nobody answered the door or that Lalonde wasn't home or that he had a last second change of heart or what.
I agree with you on the Benitez victory. He made Benitez look like a mug at times, and he wasn't! I think Leonard would beat Mayweather, prime for prime.
No one puts a gun to any fighters heads. It doesn't stop the apologists making feeble excuses though. Tyson freaks being among the worst. If a fighter signs the contract, and takes the money there are no excuses for him getting beaten.
Guys to clear up the Lalonde thing, La Londe and Dave Wolf dropped Altas after the August 1986 fight with Frank Wlters in Kentucky, then they had 6 fights under Tommy Galagher before the Sugar Ray fight in November of 1988, so it was over 2 years before LaLonde got the big money fight. Atlas went to his apartment (Which LaLonde had actually moved out of) with a friend who was armed with a gun in 1986. He was mad Lalaonde dropped him, even though all he ever did with Lalonde was hold him back in moving up and criticize him constantly.
