He is. He was beating SRL's ass till he got tired. He fought a prime Hagler unlike Leonard who waited till he was shot. And he destroyed Duran who beat Leonard.
and go watch the end of SRL v Hearns II. Another round and Hearns would have been gone. He was practically out on his feet at the end .
the 5 year break doesnt really affect his p4p greatness, probably added a dozen or so wins onto his record, but with the names that are already on it i dought it would make that much differance.
Jus kidding. Leonard was the better more versatile savvy fighter. I think Hearns was physically superior. But Leonard was greater.
Ali and Tyson's layoff's make more of a difference. With Ray Leonard his resume was already pretty awesome before then. He didn't have a huge match-up where he would've won easier had it not been for the break. With people like Ali we're left wondering what may have been in those almost 4 years...It probabily cost Ray a couple more big wins though and a little more domination, but it doesn't greatly effect his ranking.
No question Duran is the king of excuses, but it's funny how all the Leonard supporters make the same excuse for Leonard when he lost to Duran as it's always "Leonard fought Duran's fight".
I like what Steward said about Leonard when his fighter Hearns was fighting him. He said as small al Leonard was, he was really strong and punches hard.
I just figured I'd re-post my original thoughts on this topic above. SRL would have absolutely lost to Tommy Hearns in an immediate rematch. He also would have lost to a prime '83-'85 Hagler instead of the '87 version who was itching to retire. Toss in another probable loss to McCallum at 160 and you've got a guy who has been demoted from a top 10 p4p atg to a top 25 p4p atg.
Don't apologize man, Leonard's a great fighter but Tommy Hearns has the better resume p4p and would have won a clear decision in an immediate rematch...along with everything else I posted in the previous post...lol.
I don't think the rematch is a lock for either. SRL realized his body-punching was paying dividends and would've went this route had a rematch happened. Same result, most likely. But Hearns did "overtrain" according to Steward. Great fight, great fighters either way. SRL ranks higher in my view, and has the better legacy.
