This guy wasn’t a bad light heavyweight in the early 90s. Inactivity seemed to plague his career but he had a pretty good run. Fought out of Detroit and was even with Kronk for a little while. Won a handful of WBO bouts. I seem to remember his fights with Tom Collins and Anthony Hembrick being good ones. Anyone else remember him ?
He was fun to watch. Sort of came out of nowhere to get a title shot, but was a good fighter. Then disappeared just as fast. The WBO seemed to pair up with Kronk when the org first launched. Seemed like Kronk fighters fought for the WBO belts top to bottom. * Moorer was the first WBO Light Heavyweight champ (before the second, Barber) and then Moorer moved up and became the WBO heavyweight champ. * Hearns was the first WBO Super Middleweight champ. * McClellan became the WBO Middleweight champ when Eubank and Benn were done with it. * John David Jackson was the first WBO Super Welterweight champ. * Jimmy Paul fought for the WBO Super Lightweight title when the first WBO Champ (Camacho) vacated, but lost. Seems like the Kronk guys were always in a WBO title fight on the USA Network back then.
This is true. I remember Kronk guys on USA Tuesday night fights and the WBO belts being on the line a lot
@mr. magoo Funny, I was just thinking about Barber, did a google search and this thread popped up. I often wonder what happened to him, and why he vanished so quickly. He was a big light heavyweight and it was clear he was always going to move up. He fought some decent names... Piper, Hembrick, Collins and noted journeyman 'Diamond' Jim McDonald, who wasn't a bad fighter. Michalczewski of course as well. He seemed like the prototypical Kronk fighter, though more a solid puncher than a real heavy hitter. It's really quite puzzling why his career, which seemed quite promising, went nowhere fast.
