Great stuff AJ. Speaking to your Grand Dad would have been incredible, as he'd know the exact feeling of the day, and general attitudes towards Les Darcy. Darcy has to be pitied for plenty of valid reasons too. The pressures on his own head would have been enormous, with Stadiums playing a Monopoly game, the Government creating a 'dictatorship' over all young men, and Les wishing for nothing more than a fair chance at making several thousand more to secure his families finances before enlisting at will. As it were, McIntosh and Baker tarred themselves through greedy actions, and the referendum killed the prospect of government controlled conscription. I think the pressures placed on him, took its toll in the end. Without the pricks at Stadiums LTD or Conscription pressures, at least Les would have been able to fight a few more bouts in Oz. IMO, once the blood poisoning took it course, he'd have been more at peace dying on home soil. Great champion.
One must remember that we are more suseptable to infections and viruses when we are under extreme stress so it's no surprise that his health deteriorated at a time when he was being attacked from all sides. In an era when your name and reputation was everything they attacked him where he was most vunerable and I can only imagine how he really felt at such a tender age. I always felt that considering his Irish heritage he would have been better served once arriving in the USA by publically stating that he didn't want to go off to war on the basis of moral gounds, a matter of principal. Surely the yanks would have understood as they themselves had to fight the English for their independence. He could have said something like "I've always wanted to live in this great nation that fought for what we all should be entitled....our freedom. Unfortunately, while Australia is a wonderful land in which many of my family, friends and fans have helped me become the person I am today, the nation will never be complete until she can stand on her own two feet and become a truely free land such as the United States of America..." or something like that. As for McIntosh, history has declared him a dog.
Mate, for Darcy's health, the first week on the ship would have deteriorated him rapidly. The seasickness suffered by himself and Tim Sullivan was enough to make the reader feel ill. Combined with the pressures of the previous months, the mental and physical drain that would have endured had absolutely no positives for Darcy. McIntosh and Baker both set out to destroy Les' reputation as soon as they knew of his whereabouts. Even before he reached the USA, his name was tarnished by the press. The only smiling faces to greet Les were those of the promoters. I cant imagine any sweet talking being favourable for him either. The Yanks were a nation dictated to by the press.... that doesnt seem to have changed until this day!! Arriving in NY was another deadly error in hindsight. Gov. Whitman, the wanker, was anti-boxing through and through. An egotist with the attitude of a school headmaster. A better plan being thought out by Les and his accomplices may have helped his cause. Hugh D and Snowy were money hungry pricks, and motivated by the $$$. Just a thought??? How do you think Darcy and co. may have fared, had they have brokered a deal with the Stadiums LTD. McIntosh had been eager to take Les to the US himself, and manage his affairs earlier. I wonder if Les could have offered a percentage of his purses to Hugh D, those purses being far greater than any on home soil. I think Hugh might have come to the party, as long as his name was not implicated in the 'stowaway' situation. Once the conscription matter has failed, I think Hugh would have made it public that he was involved, and then proceeded to polish Darcy's name again. ????????????? Just remeber... 10 round title bouts were all the rage in the US. I'm sure Les could fight and beat ALL comers in the US, on a fortnightly basis over 10 rounds. As it was, he faught Murray, Clabby twice, Loughrey, Holland, KO Brown and Christie over 20 rounds, and lined up to fight again just over or less than a month later each time in Oz. With McIntosh's backing, he'd have wiped the floor with all big names in the States. Its a shame this never materialised.
If only he'd lived on - imagine him.against Hry Greb. Looking at the First World War his not joining up.was common sense.
Snowy Baker was a dead c**t. May the scumbag rot in fkn hell. Where is Baker buried? I think i want to be able to say i pissed on his grave before in my lifetime. .

100 years ago.... a public figure who was HATED in Australia and had to leave the counry for his treatment of Darcy.... FK HIM!!! **** ON HIM!
So you hate someone you never met because he did something to someone else you never met? That's a bit weird.
Bull****. Youve seen almost NONE of Darcys fights... neither has anyone else. What, a couple of rounds of 1 or 2 fights, grainy, old, and no context. You base your FKN amazing declaration on that??!! You are either the richest punter in history, or THE forum bullshitter... Now, im no nostradamus....but i recon i know which of the two... .
