how good was he ?...and how good could he have been ? ............ This content is protected DARCY, JAMES LESLIE (1895-1917), boxer and folk hero, was born on 31 October 1895 at Stradbroke, near Maitland, New South Wales, second son of native-born parents Edward Darcy (or Dorsey), labourer and later a share-farmer, and his wife Margaret, née O'Rourke. His grandparents came from Tipperary, Ireland. Leaving Oakhampton Public School in 1907 Les worked as a carter before being apprenticed at 15 to a blacksmith at East Maitland. As his father was at times unemployed, and his elder brother was partly crippled, Les was called upon to help his large family. he is pictured above in 1910 at the age of 15 he died from pneumonia at the age of 22
Impressive. He completely schools Chip here. What's particularly impressive is his defensive skills. His ability to parry, tie up and block sees Chip scarcely land a solid blow and Darcy didn't have a reputation as a great defensive fighter.Maybe it was something he would have developed into which is scary. He also thrashes Chip on the inside and shows a tidy jab (especially to the body, something you don't see a lot of these days). Nice footage mate :good
He was quite simply the best M/W in the world 1915-1916. Never reaching his peak or full potential. The tough schedules set by Stadiums LTD in Australia had caused the touring Yanks a lot of anguish, yet Darcy relished every possible minute in the ring, fighting, belting and making tonnes of cash against these men. Had he met Greb, Dillon, Carpentier... any fighter from M/W to H/W of the time, I have little doubt that Darcy would have handled ALL very well. That includes Dempsey. ....he died at the age of 21.
