The thing is, I can see why people thought that Pavlik could knock Martinez out.

Even slower fighters can touch Martinez with right hands. Clearly, his legs are rarely anchored enough for him to be said to be totally "on-balance". It's not inconceivable for a big power hitter - especially one with some bulk on him - to score a flash KD. The problem is, most of the punches that connect do so in a rolling manner...and even the ones that are flush enough to park him on his butt when his feet aren't set, aren't guaranteed to keep him down. This man blinks off bombs from larger men like they were slaps from a cheerleader.

Once you realize that Pavlik is too slow to catch Martinez consistently with the right hand...and not quite powerful enough to put him to sleep with any one shot (I don't know that anybody below 168 is)...it becomes apparent that a Martinez decision is the smart choice. The Ghost Whisperers just couldn't accept either of those truisms...and hence the bitter divide in opinion.

It was always "Martinez UD" or "Pavlik KO". The other options: Pavlik getting stopped - or outpointing Sergio - were never even on the table.

 

I thought Pavlik could knock him out and I went back and forth on the issue, eventually settling with a Martinez UD prediction, but I was never dogmatic about it. People saying **** like Maravilla is a joke or KP is God's gift to MW deserve to get railed. It was a close call before, it was a fight that demanded respect, when you go out talking ****, you pay for it.

I'm as cynical about the state of the alphabet organization cluster**** in the sport as the next guy, but personally I still don't really honor "Ring" belts.
