Martinez shocked with his stamina on this night. Totally unlike the winded guy seen in his previous American showcases. Could not believe how hard this dude came out in the 9th.

Well he's abit right cause the stretcher thing goes direct to the hospital but it's the opposite cause Pavlik is the one that is going to the hospital.

I can not, for the life of me, understand why so many people keep acting like power is Kelly's only advantage. Kelly's best decision win was a UD over Jermain Tayor when JT was still at, or at least near, his peak. Hopkins tried to get a decision over JT, and failed twice. Winky also failed. Pavlik succeeded at a level where an all time great failed, and a future HOF inductee failed as well.

I've layed out my analysis in numerous posts. Here are a few examples.

The 3 fights that brought Martinez to real prominence were Bunema, Cintron, and Williams. Bunema was way past his best, and McKart beat this guy when he was prime.

Cintron wasn't nearly agressive enough, doesn't have much heart, doesn't think on his feet very well, and can't cut the ring off to save his own life.

Williams has all the defensive skills of Carl Froch! Paul doesn't know how to cut the ring off. He isn't very strong at 160, and he does not have true middleweight power.

I don't think Sergio has ever faced a fighter like KP. In the words of Nazim Richardson; "An ass whoopin' don't mean **** to this kid." Kelly will keep comin', and he'll land the right hand, the jab, and the long left hook from outside with surprising regularity.

If Sergio wants to win rounds, he has to get close enough to hit Pavlik. He likes to rush in and fire quick combos, but he usually leads with his face. On the inside he'll get hit with short over hand rights, left uppercuts, and bodyshots from both sides. Martinez will start slowing down after 4-6 rounds, and he'll do what he always does when he is tired and hurt: He'll start backing up in straight lines with his hands out of position, and KP will close the show somewhere in the middle rounds.

Pavlik fought 98 amatuer fights, and 37 pro fights. This ain't the first time he faced an unorthodox brawler with fast hands and feet. At the end of the day two things will be clear. 1) Pavlik can box a hell of a lot better than most people give him credit for. 2) Sergio Martinez is not a middleweight.

It is a historical fact that in 2007-2008 I made several posts where I described EXACTLY what an opponent has to do to beat Pavlik. Ironically, the Hopkins/Pavlik fight looked almost exactly like the fights I described. Sergio Martinez is not a LHW, and even if he was, he ain't no BHop.

Against Pavlik, Martinez cannot effectively uses strategic clinching to slow the pace down. He isn't strong enough, nor is smart enough to know how to move in without getting caught.

I doubt if Martinez has the power it takes to get Kelly's respect. KP is a guy that does not give a **** about an ass whoopin' if taking one will allow him to bully his opponent back against the ropes or into a corner.

Martinez has fast hands and feet, but I could name several guys KP beat out who have better defense than Martinez.

After careful review of Sergio's last 3 fights I no longer beleive he is a difficult opponent for Pav. The guy just has way to many bad habits to do well for more than 3 or 4 rounds.

When I watch Martinez I always think of the term "skitterbug." The guy skitters all over the whole ring. He moves fast and he moves a lot.

However, not all movement is intelligent movement. Martinez wastes a lot of energy on mindless movement for the sake of movement.

He circles the wrong way, he rushes in face first rather than coming in behind a good jab, and he often backs up in straight lines without throwing punches or properly defending himself.

Any one of the bad habits mentioned above is enough to get a guy knocked out by Kelly Pavlik. Put all three of them together, in a fight where Pavlik will be looking to make a statement, and Pavlik by brutal knockout seems like a foregone conclusion.

If Sergio could drop those habits in one training camp, he'd have a much better chance. However, dropping those habits in one training camp seems very unlikely. He's been fighting the exact same way ever since the Margarito fight ten years ago.

Pressure and power bother Martinez, and they bother him a lot. He has two losses ten years apart. BUT both losses came against durable, high work rate, pressure fighters. Pavlik is a bigger, stronger, smarter pressure fighter than anything Martinez so much as had nightmares about.

As an amatuer Pavlik amassed a record of 89-9, won multiple national titles, and made the Olympic Trials at a mere 17 years of age. He was eventually eliminated by Jermain Taylor. JT went on to win a bronze medal in the 2000 Olympics, and Pavlik signed with Top Rank and fought his first pro fight that year.

The experience gap between Pavlik and Martinez is to enormous to ignore. Pavlik won his first national title at 147 right around the same time Martinez started boxing!

The first time Martinez tried to take a step up in class he got obliterated by Margarito, and then all but disappeared for nearly 9 years. The first time Pavlik stepped up in class he scored consecutive stoppage wins over Zuniga, McKart, Zertuche, Miranda, and Jermain Taylor. Sergio's big claims to fame consist of a controversial draw with Cintron, and a loss to Williams; both of whom are natural welterweights. Pavlik ran right over two guys who were the biggest and best middleweights in the world at fight time. The difference in experience and class between these two ought to be obvious.

Various threads on ESB, and many interent articles make it clear that the difference is not obvious to most people, so I hope to help a few people shed their blinders, and take a realistic look at the upcoming Pavlik/Martinez fight.

The first and most obvious thing is Martinez's general lack of sound fundamentals. For example he does not keep his hands up or place his hands in a proper defensive position when he is under attack and getting tagged. Pavlik will attack, and Martinez will get tagged.

On the same note, Martinez does occassioanally keep his hands up near his chin, but he often drops them while he is still in his opponents effective firing range, and gets hit. That is definitely not a good idea when Pavlik is your opponent.

The idea that such a highly regarded fighter makes the mistakes I've seen Martinez make is actually a bit shocking. His jab is often almost humorous. He frequently sticks his right hand out in the middle of nowhere, and just sort of waves it around aimlessly, and then he paws, pushes, and telegraphs his jab. This leaves Martinez with little means of keeping Pavlik off of him. It also presents one more opportunity for Pavlik to hit Martinez with right hand bombs.

And speaking of right hands, Martinez leaves himself open to hard right hands so much of the time one has to wonder if he even knows how to defend against a good right hand. If Cintron and Williams can blast Martinez with right hands, trust me, Pavlik will hit him more times with bigger right hands.

Martinez spends so much time show boating and taunting his opponents that I honestly believe that taking away his ability to do that would take him way out of his comfort zone. Pavlik will stay right in Sergio's grill, force him to fight, and force him to keep his hands up, or get blasted.

Martinez loves to rush in and throw a lead left. However, he tends to telegrah what he is doing, and he comes straight in. If he does that against Pavlik, he'll get caught with a really brutal jab/right-hand nearly everytime.

In my opinion Sergio's best punch is his right hook. However, he does not do a great job of setting it up. He usually just rushes in with his face hanging out, and throws. This is a very predictable pattern. If Martinez is coming in from your left side, he will throw a right hook. Look for KP to take one short step to his own right, throw a short overhand right followed by a left uppercut, and then take a step back and hit a stunned Martinez with a good 1-2. I hate to be so specific in this type of post, but I honestly believe this might be the show stopper.

Martinez spends a god awful amount of time circling the wrong way. For a guy who is proned to getting hit with right hands circling directly into a Pavlik lead right is probably a very bad idea.

Pavlik's flaws have been cussed and discussed on ESB ad nauseum. Most people seem to literally have blinders on when it comes to Martinez's flaws. They are many, and they are the kind of flaws that get fighters knocked the **** out by Kelly Pavlik. The round depends a great deal on how aggressive Martinez is. If he is as aggresive as he was with Cintron and/or Williams, he won't see the end of eight.

Boo probably killed himself he was talking mad **** leading up to the fight, any post even saying sergio MIGHT win he would slam them with a 3 paragraph analysis with why Pavlik will win.

Boo needs to admit that Sergio was a better fighter then he could have imagined or Pavlik was a worse fighter then he imagined

He looked fine in the championship rounds against Cintron, and even though he looked winded against Williams he didn't fight like he was tired. I never questioned his stamina.
