Fights were the lesser man won due to youth/sheer physical talent/athleticism as opposed to skill, or being the better fighter.

Hopkin's losing 2x to Jermain Taylor and Joe Calzaghe springs to mind immediately.

I've said it before that Calzaghe did nothing in the Hopkin's fight to win it besides workrate.

Footwork, defensive work, footwork, clean punching. Guess who had the better work in all of the listed? :scaredas:

Anyway, what other match-ups come to mind?

Well, that workrate allowed Joe to land more punches. That helped.

Oscar De Le Hoya vs. Pernell Whitaker springs to mind. Pernell was very much the finer boxer in that match, but Oscar brought everything else: The power, the speed, and many more punches. That match was always an interesting score for me.

good answers so far. i might get slaughtered for this one but what about pryor against arguello. arguello i feel was more skilled albeit faded but pryor's stamina, chin and workrate just bowled him over

for a similar example, hatton over zoo

Jones beating Toney...and maybe hopkins to. Time has shown that as time has passed, and each has lost some athletic gifts...Jones has lost the most, because so much of his success was passed on freakish athletic gifts.

    Pacquio beating Marquez

    Berto beating Collazo.

    Paul Williams beating Winky.

I think Taylore beating Hopkins is a perfect example too.

    Saddler beating Pep?
    Wlad beating Byrd?
Both not really or only due to athleticism though.

Hamed won most of his fights based on his superior athleticism (and power).

According to the abomination that is Punchstat, anyway. Joe was slapping at air, shoulders, and elbows for the vast majority of that fight while being tagged with clean counters nearly every time he made a play.

    Moore vs Kalule

Though i think saying winning with just sheer athleticism goes too far in most cases, even for the inept efforts of Calzaghe or Taylor.

Pac vs Marquez is a good example, but Berto didn't beat Collazo (although he did officially- what a ripoff that was for Collazo), and Wright was washed up; he couldn't display the skill he once showed.

but that is claiming that jones is lesser than either, i disagree. maybe less skilled technically but jones is better than both
