Just as Frank Sinatra took photos at Ali-Frazier I, Stevie Wonder wrote this fight report for Boxing Illustrated.
I think Johnson also had real trouble keepign sharp for 12 rounds. In most of the fights i've seen him in his offense and handspeed starts to get inconsistent and progressively sloppier after 4 or 5 rounds. He arguably should still have got the decision in his fights with Castro and jackson though.
It was a bad call, but the extended highlights of the fight make it seem more so in the region of 3 or 4 points. Foster was faded but still a damn good dangerous fighter. No mean feat for Ahumada to perform as well as he did.Very underrated fighter is Jorge.
I'll throw Marcos Villasana/Antonio Esparragoza in here as I often do. Draw my ass. Villasana had him running laps all night, had him shaky on his feet more then once as well. Funny how one judge had Villasana winning by 5 points.
Two of the worst decisions I've ever seen, right there. Also: Joey Archer vs. Holly Mims. Archer got the **** beat outta him IMO. Believe that fight is on Youtube.
I'd add in Eubank vs Schommer here. Out off all the controversial fights Eubank was in this was the one that was an out and out robbery imo.The others were mostly all just very close fights, but this was one where i don't think Eubank won more than two or three rounds. He looked totally shot and this was against probably the worst fighter he ever defended against.A fat part time fighter with no real skills at all.
You're right there mate. I did say Johnson's skills were excellent but that's probably saying a bit too much. Definitely tended to get sloppy in fights - the one real exception being the Steve Collins fight, where he really started to motor midway through the fight (actually started a bit sloppy there, but Steve did roughouse him and didn't give him the opportunity to get set until he tired a little).
Eubank vs Mauricio Amaral too. If Willie Pep winning a round without throwing a punch was a myth, then I can safely say Eubank did it throughout most of this fight.
He was definitely a very good boxer at his best.Just lacking that extra sharpness needed to take him to the next level. Conteh, i should probably watch that one again.Don't remember it being that bad, but Eubank's fights at that stage were so awful they all sort of blur into one.
Anyone ever see Zarate-Pintor? Horrible, I think the only judge who rightfully scored it for Zarate had it like 145-133! LOL
Big shame. Zarate could of gone on too more big fights had he need fell out of love with Boxing after that. He felt he was robbed.
