Maybe a boycott of the whole event by the public will persuade any other old-fighters out of embarassing themself and being remembered as 40/50year old has beens and laughing stock rather then the elite of a demanding sport that which they were.

I really hope Ellis doesn't pass the medical. he shouldn't, but if theres a million dollars in it for him, I reckon he'd find a way to score a clean sheet on health :yep.

He really shouldn't be fighting though. he had real mental problems before, and getting punched in the head wont do him many favours.

As much as I don't begrudge Lester a payday, this is a very sad thing. After reading his book seems we can disregard the final few chapters of it. Will not buy, will not watch at the pub.

Ellis vs Michael II - Wonder if they'll get Gus to ref it again??

Australian boxing icon and noted world title referee and judge Gus Mercurio celebrated his 80th birthday in Melbourne, Australia on August 9. Gus was born in 1928 in West Bend, Wisconsin, USA and boxed as an amateur and professional in the lightweight ranks during the 1950s in the USA. He visited Australia in 1956 for the Melbourne Olympics and liked it so much he settled in that city.

Mercurio has refereed or judged world title bouts in Australia, USA, South Korea, and Thailand for the WBC and IBF. He was the third man in the ring for the IBF jr lightweight bout between Barry Michael and Lester Ellis in 1985. Gus is also a highly regarded movie and television star and featured in fifteen movies including the hit movies The Man From Snowy River and Crocodile Dundee. Gus was also a boxing trainer, matchmaker, boxing scribe, author and broadcaster. He was also the President of the Australian National Boxing Federation.

.....and HAPPY BIRTHDAY GUS - from everyone on the forum!!

Couldhavebeen, its simply matter of fact, that fights of this nature remain to be scrutinised. The points wishing to be proved by the combatants no longer remain within view, debatable or benficial to their career testimonies . The years have faded them, as ourselves.

The enduring outcome, may well be the exposure to the public, of the detremental effects of physical self-abuse...

Barry Michael will be in tip-top condition for a man of his age fighting again. Lester is a concern, with the dramas through the last years.. He wont be fighting Mundine this time, and that may benefit his length of stay.

The outcome of this bout may be forgoten quicker than Fenech/Nelson 3, yet, it may still open the wallet for the winner again.... Therefore, allowing those keenly interested (far too late) to see Fenech matched.

A money spinner, disgrace, concern, chance to prove little.... yet an interest for morbid reasons.

I look forward to seeing the threesome alive and well, after all is said and done, and Michael having his day in the sun... again.

"A strange thing happened to my mind in the intervening years. It got so I couldn't stand having boxing gloves on my hands, not a good thing for a boxer. Felt sort of claustrophobic and I would panic. It first happened when I was kickboxing. After I fought Steve Douet, I couldn't get my gloves off and I start panicking. I said to my trainer Dave Hedgecock, 'Mate, get these ****in' things off right now! Right now! Get a razor blade. You deaf?' I was off my head.
To this day I can't wear gloves, especially with laces. I can only put on the sort of gloves that yo slide your hand into and out of. I don't know what it is. I've been to a doctor about it. He called it a panic attack."

Boys this is why i may never return to this forum again..

Im a MMA fanboy these days.More action and they atleast have to earn ridiculous paychecks in that sport.

    1million dollars:huh .

To think 2 old hasbeens can decide whenever they feel like it to lace up the gloves and somehow some idiots are willing to pay them the big bucks to go ahead with the freakshow.

Only in Australia. This makes me sick..

See you later boys im off to talk about Kimbo slice and Brock Lesnar:thumbsup

    Real fighters:good

No great loss.... as its not the people involved in this forum who decided the eventuation of this particular fight. We merely speculate on the out come, ridicule one anothers opinions, have a giggle and wish for those involved to walk away with no physical defecits, post fight.

Only in Australia??? That, in itself, may well be the most self-degradating comment posted on this site.

Whatever toilet of a country you represent, you are a poor ambassador for.
