Not a thread topic I think I’ve seen much about as a general topic so let’s talk about disqualifications. @Saintpat got me thinking about this subject when he mentioned Frank Bruno’s consistent fouling (e.g. from rabbit punches) going unpunished. A referee has a fair range of discretion when it comes to punishing fouls although there is expected behaviour to follow depending on the type of foul, such as flagrant low blows that obviously cause damage to a fighter resulting in at least a point deduction and an up-to-5 minute respite for the fouled fighter. Have you ever seen a fighter exercise that 5 minutes in full? What do you think are justifiable cases of instant disqualifications? Name some examples where that has happened. What flagrant examples of unpunished fouling can you think of? Name some specific fights and what the fouling was. Do you think fighters are punished or not punished sometimes due to their reputations? Who are they? Any particularly bizarre disqualifications you can think of?

they can often be contrived misdemeanours with watchful eyes eagerly awaiting any opportunity to be used to nullify one, in order to favour the owned & invested fighter(s)... much like a 'break' being used against one and not equally the other, and no diff too than a robbed decision. Boxing the BUSINESS always wins. Some are legitimate too, of course, but they have been equally employed for the gain of one, Draws too can be used to favour the invested, if a loss looks possible. it's a Corrupt old biz, ran by some of the greatest of upstanding citizens after all.
Here’s a famous bizarre example of a fight that ended with a knockout punch that landed after the bell had rung but was not a disqualification for the fighter who threw it and was first ruled a KO win and then ruled a No Contest… but with the fighter who threw the punch still being named the champion even though he was the challenger coming in - Tomas Molinares v Marlon Starling: This content is protected For more context on the ending and final outcome: https://boxrec.com/wiki/index.php/Marlon_Starling_vs._Tomas_Molinares
not off the Top of my head without going into my Files, but many a DQ got frowned upon and sometimes eventfully... Clinching - Cortez was over anxious in a fight not so many years ago, was it Hatton, I can't remember, loads of complaints on these type of excesses. Draws - the Canadian Featherweight Vic Foley, for example, a feared & noted Contender suffered 29 Draws, many times against the Top guy or guys, one has to wonder if some of them were a bit generous to the owned boy
You would never know that fighters have 5 minutes to recover with the way most refs hover around the recovering fighter asking them if they're ready to go every 15 seconds.
And that Starling KO was the correct decision. They were both throwing at the same time after the bell.
Holyfield loved to headbut and low blow often at the same time, how often was he punished? mayweather was the king of elbows maybe his superior skills allowed him to disguise them but I don’t remember him getting punished for it. fury loves to hold and rabbit punch, never punished. I think it depends who the money is on whether it’s punishable or not
One bizzare disqualification was in Carlos Molina vs James Kirkland fight. Molina schooled Kirkland for most of the fight, got dropped at the end of round 10, got up - but his cornerman got in the ring before the bell rang. Ref found it good enough reason to disqualify Molina. If We go by the letter of the law, referee has a case and He would be able to defend himself in court, but it's completely against spirit of a law and I thought it was disgusting way of robbing Molina. It looked like just a bad excuse to give a win to A-side fighter. I'm sure it happens much more often and sometimes in much more obvious fashion, like when Roger Mayweather got into the ring in Floyd's fight against Zab Judah, which technically could've got him DQ'd also.
Will add this one. There used to be more video on it available but it was taken down. This content is protected
Abner Mares vs Joseph Agbeko Vasyl Lomachenko vs Orlando Salido Both Mares and Salido should've been DQed for landing over 100 blows, and the fact both fighters won the fight is criminal.
Funnily enough i was watching an interview with Marlon yesterday on you tube.In it he states that besides getting knocked out it was his best ever performance.Bizarre?
Henry Cooper, 187 lbs wins by DQ in round 8 of a 15 rounder vs Karl Mildenberger,208 on Sept 18 1968 to win the European Heavyweight Title
Joseph Obudate was an engineer, I believe, who refereed the first Mando Ramos - Pedro Carrasco 15 rounder for the vacant WBC lightweight title. Ramos hammered away at Carrasco, dropping him 4 times, the last time i believe in the 10th but he and Carrasco got tangled up and Ramos ended up pushing him over. At the start of the 11th Obudate just sort of stops them and DQ's Ramos for the offense, claiming he was warning him throughout the fight. Total uproar, even from the Spanish Press (they fought in Spain) stating what a travesty the referee's decision was. Obudate - according to boxrec - had never refereed a bout before and never did afterwards. I think this fits the bill for a bizarre DQ.
