Michael Nunn is a could have been fighter. He had all the physical tools and talent to become ATG but it seems it went downhill after the Toney fight. I like his style, and thanks Addie for introducing me to him when you used his avy at one time. Him and Roy Jones could have been a great fight.
Anyways, Nunn had a lot of talent, he just never really had the head to put his tools together. He was no great, despite his potential.
when ugar ray leonard was cherry picking his opponents in the late 80s, nunns name was mentioned...BEFORE leonard saw what he did to kalambay...(first hand since he was commentating) leonard fought lalonde, for the 168 and somehow the 175 wbc titles in the sme night in 88, duran in 89, witnesses the kalambay massacare in 90, then figures he would drop to 154 and fight terry norris....he avoided mike nunn like the plaque
A.k.a. the fight was very lose unlike it's made out to be.Nunn had an early lead but Toney was gaining momentum.
Nunn was a great fighter, very fast, skillfull, and a good chin too. As for Toney-Nunn, well Toney was very green and considered an easy defense for Nunn, a fight where Nunn could look great before his hometown crowd of Davenport. I believe that Nunn underestimated Toney. Nunn outboxed Toney for 9 rounds but never dominated him, Toney was more competitive than expected. Toney consistently scored discreet but effective body punches and by round 10 Nunn simply gassed. Toney had a big round 10 and he knew he'd have to go for the KO to win this fight. He went for the KO in round 11 and got it, I think it was the upset of the year or close to it. It certainly wasn't 'a lucky punch'.
What I most remember from the toney Nunn fight was this line: "James your runnin outta rounds, you gots to dog this man"
That was absolutely wrong what he did to Kalambay. Got to be up there with the great one-shots in history.
