Big enough: Floyd was a 1/7 favourite to win, whereas Baldomir was quoted at 9/2 against. I can't think of anyone with any common sense or knowledge of boxing who gave Baldo a shaot at upsetting Mayweather.

Weren't all of Commodus' gladiatorial fights fixed in his favour, in order to pander to his ego?

Yes he did but because he beat that mental midget Judah for the 147 title Floyd had to fight him over more dangerous oppponents !

Basically, to allow Floyd to win a world title (in this case, the WBC belt) in a 4th weight division.

As of November 2006 you can not make a reasonable argument for seeing Margarito as the greater coup than Baldomir going by their resumes (as opposed to all the fan-built mythos of their respective ability h2h, particularly the very hyped Margarito)

Even without the lineal title, Baldomir was coming off a better run of three victories than Margarito had ever had in his career at that point. He beat Miki Rodriguez (then a solid B), Zab Judah (excellent victory, big upset), and Gatti (winding down but still a B+, and good enough to show that beating Judah was no fluke) in a WBC eliminator, title capture, and defense.

Margarito had done nothing to compare with that. Remember that Cotto I, his signature win, still lay twenty months into his future. Heck, it wasn't until a month after Pretty Risky that he even beat Clottey. As of November 2006 his top results were stoppages of unbeaten Cintron, ancient Randall, Luján, and Six Heads Lewis. If you want to be EXTREMELY generous you can toss in green Martinez, but nobody rated that win yet at the time and wouldn't for a while. Anybody that claims they knew Martinez or rated the win over him in 2006 can be marked down on your Big Fat Liar, Pants on Fire list (along with anybody who doesn't live in South Africa but claims to have seen Makabu vs. Mchunu :yep). You want to know what Maravilla was up to around then? A month before Mayweather vs. Baldomir, he fought a guy with a record of 1-7-2...and that wasn't just some Wonjongkam style one-off. That was his fifth straight opponent in Spain with a losing record. So let's quit pretending Martinez was in the equation in contemporaneous evaluations of Baldomir's resume versus Margarito's.

You have Judah and to a lesser extent Gatti completely blowing away the likes of Cintron, Luján, Randall and Lewis. (and even Miki Rodriguez was comparable to both of the latter two, with only the Puerto Ricans standing out as brighter spots than him on Margarito's resume)

True! I'd forgotten that...and while it was a DQ while down on the cards it gets no more asterisk next to it than Margarito's win over Clottey would (as Clottey had been whupping him before the injury).

He also drew with Jose Luis Cruz and twice knocked out Azugum (undefeated when they first met) - both of which are better results than any Margarito had in November 2006 besides the pair of boricuas.

Judah, Clottey, Gatti, Rodriguez, and the Cruz draw >>>>>>>> Margarito's entire resume as of then.

It was a masterclass shutout for the lineal welterweight title. Think what you may of him, can't scoff at that.
