Some folks may get confused on the whole Straight Right or Straight Left situation and I have a method that may very well work to help. If you look at a Straight like a Jab with hip rotation, you very well may understand that you don't have to differentiate techniques between the Straight and the Jab.

So how about we tackle the Jab first.

Throwing a powerful jab without immense hip rotation or stepping requires you to throw from the shoulder. Watch this video of the legendary Thomas Hearns teaching Timothy Bradley for more insight.

If you also look, Bradley has two distinctively different forms of power in his Jab and in his Straight right hand. He particularly has more SNAP in the jab but more of a thumping power in his right hand, not really enough to snap and rip through the opponent like it should. This leads to my next point, the shoulder snap.

Get into your stance and get ready to throw jabs. Throw about 5 jabs with the shoulder low (don't even use the shoulder) while shadow boxing or while hitting a bag or pad. You will FEEL that there is very little power in the punch. Now bring the shoulder UP while throwing the punch and let your shoulder cap touch your cheek (if you keep your chin down, you will feel this). This creates that additional leverage in the punch that will allow you to snap and hit with weight behind it. Here is a video with Mike Tyson hitting the heavy bag but the final clip is the most important part where he demonstrates that shoulder snap.

Drills that you can use can be...

    1. Switch your stance and throw the proper jab from the opposite stance.
If you are orthodox, switch to lefty and practice throwing that right lead to concentrate on getting that shoulder into it. REMEMBER, ALL A STRAIGHT IS, IS A JAB WITH ROTATION.
    2. Practice throwing the straight from your original stance and focus on getting that shoulder up (MOST IMPORTANTLY) and rotation.

Heres another video of Gennady Golovkin hitting the pads. Download and slow it down if you can and see what I am talking about.

REMEMBER:: A straight is a jab with rotation and a sit down for added power. All power comes from the ground up but if you screw up at any point and disturb your distribution of power, you won't get that power. Any questions or concerns, let me know.

DISCLAIMER::This is a METHOD not an ends-all solution so if you hate it, **** it, if you love it, awesome but don't shoot down other people's aspirations or need for help because your head is shoved up too far up your ass. Also, I am well aware that there is more than just the shoulder when punching. I just wanted to inform and touch up on one of the key aspects to why people lose so much generated power when they punch.
