Usain Bolt can run faster than Bob Hayes.

Wilder knocks Ali's head clean off.

A lot of boxers would have better resumes if you discounted every loss they had at 31 years of age or older lol.

Still probably the best naturally skilled fighter i,ve ever seen. Forget weights etc. The guy done things most guys couldn,t even dream about. He let himself go a bit with the lay off etc was never quite the same after it....but on his best night i m not sure anyone was better than him in terms of pure skill. The closest thing to him i,ve seen was roy jones junior in his prime.

The truth is these guys stand out even today....they just looked like they we,re on a different playing field on their best night. Both also looked like they had another gear to go up. They beat good guys in what looked like first gear at times. Careers are long....guys like that dlnt always stay as great as they we,re....but on their best night two of the best fighters i ve ever seen.

Its one of them that guys that know boxing get wrong....i think its because casuals see these guys and claim their the best ever....guys that follow boxing like to think they know better than just the average fan. But in this case for me anyway the casuals get it right....think the same thing happens with mike tyson.

    Ali
    Roy jones
    Mike tyson

Three guys that stood above everyone else on their best night.

Yeah but the also did not lose three years in their prime. He was 6'3" and 200 when he was not allowed to fight but he was around 225-230 when he came back and the legs were not what they had been at a lighter weight

But look at the record of the guys he beat, most of them lost tonnes of fights to bums! Have you ever considered that the whole era, although an exciting one, is overrated in terms of skill?

I don't think that the 60's era was particularly strong, but the 70's one was.

You've questioned how impressive he was.

To look at how impressive someone is, you put their abilities under the microscope, before then looking at who they fought and at one point etc.

There's an awful lot of factors to look at and consider.

If you put his abilities and attributes under the microscope, you see a formidable fighter.

He had good height, good reach, good weight, with amazing speed of hand and foot for a man of his size, with great skills, as well as a very good chin, the heart of a lion, and huge self confidence which he could use in order to gain a psychological advantage over many of his opponents.

Apart from a lack of huge power, he was pretty much the perfect HW.

    He didn't have many flaws.

At his best, he could literally have fought in any era of the sport.

On a H2H basis, he matches up well with anybody in history.

If I look at his competition, I rate it highly as I think the best guys he fought would have been competitive in any era, including the current one.

If I look at his resume, I rate it highly due to the fact that most of his best wins came when he was past his best and not the fighter he'd been previously.

All things considered, I think he had a very impressive career and was one of the greatest HW's of all time.

I think that's a bold statement for someone like you that's so adamant against getting high praise for undeserved wins.

There's never been a more charismatic, fluid-moving heavyweight boxer ever. So in that sense, Ali is in a league all his own. There's never been a better showman in the ring either imho. All that stuff when he would write poems about what round he would stop opponents and just all the pre-fight hoopla, no one ever did it better than Ali. But once he returned in the 1970s he was not the same unstoppable force he was in the 1960s, but he still managed to capture that same feeling from the 1960s even as his skills started to diminish.

Make no mistake about it, there's never been a better heavyweight than Clay / Ali in the mid 1960s. That guy was on another level to any Heavyweight ever.

That man had nearly four years of his prime stolen from him, for purely political reasons, yet he still became one of the best ever. Till then he was UNBEATABLE!!!!
