Say the time frame is spring of 1988. Holmes is gone. Tyson has already cleaned out the division, and is anticipating his super fight with Spinks. Holy is still at cruiser. Some of the top contenders include Tony Tubbs, Trevor Berbick, Frank Bruno, Carl Williams, Tyrell Biggs, etc.

Now from memory, I think #11 to #20 were most likely guys like George Foreman, Willie Dewitt, Horace Notice, pinklon Thomas, John Tate, Francesco Damiani, Orlin Norris, Razor Ruddock, Alex Stewart, etc.....

Could be wrong about some of those guys, and frankly this is mostly just guess work from memory, but to humor me, lets go with those names....

Now can you take one or two of those, and design a handpicked track to the title for one of them? I think Damiani is a guy who might have made it if he fought the right guys while avoiding others. As it stands he built a 27-0 record and acquired the WBO title which he held through 1991. He had wins over Biggs, Duplooy, Neto, and a few others, plus outboxing a peak Mercer handely before falling victom to a big shot. Perhaps, if he had started back in '88 fighting more guys like past prime versions of Thomas, Tate and Tillis to go with his Biggs fight, he might have gotten boosted a bit faster....

Let's think of some hypothetical scenarios. Ad more names if you choose.

It would not of helped his purses; but how about an 22-0 (22) Alex Stewart avoiding Holyfield and with great foresight going:

    November 1989: WKO1 James Broad
    April 1990: WKO4 Michael Dokes
    August 1990 WKO2 Johnny DuPlooy
    December 1990 WKO7 Tyrell Biggs
    March 1991 WKO1 Bruce Seldon
    October 1991 WKO6 Tommy Morrison
    February 1992 WKO2 Bert Cooper
    April 1992 WKO1 Alex Garcia
    July 1992 WKO5 Greg Page
    October 1992 WKO2 Donavon Ruddock
May 1993 LU12 Lennox Lewis (for the vacant WBC title)

    November 1989: WKO1 James Broad
(Stewart wins this one, but it goes the distance or ends in late round stoppage)

    April 1990: WKO4 Michael Dokes
(This bout could have gone either way, depending on Dokes's conditioning at the time. If Stewart prevailed, it would have been in a longer, tougher fight.)

    August 1990 WKO2 Johnny DuPlooy
    (I agree with this one.)

    December 1990 WKO7 Tyrell Biggs
(Okay, this outcome is reasonable. Stewart would have won, very possibly by stoppage.)

    March 1991 WKO1 Bruce Seldon
(I totally disagree here. This fight would have been competitive, probably lasting the entire ten rounds. It could have gone either way, and my guess is that Seldon would have won.)

    October 1991 WKO6 Tommy Morrison
(Maybe, maybe not. Given Morrison's vulnerability and power, any outcome would have been possible here. Your pick is entirely possible though.)

    February 1992 WKO2 Bert Cooper
(Cooper would have lasted the entire ten rounds with Stewart. Stewart wins on points.)

    April 1992 WKO1 Alex Garcia
(This outcome is within the realm of possibility. My guess is that Stewart would have won in the middle rounds though.)

    July 1992 WKO5 Greg Page
(Stewart would have beaten Page in 1992, I agree, but the bout probably would have gone the distance, or at least have lasted until the late rounds. Page was in shape in 1992.)

    October 1992 WKO2 Donavon Ruddock
(I say this outcome is impossible. Ruddock, in 1992, would have had too much for Stewart. Ruddock wins this fight by clear decision or a mid to late rounds stoppage. No way around it.)

May 1993 LU12 Lennox Lewis (for the vacant WBC title)
(Lewis would have stopped Stewart anywhere between one and seven rounds in 1993. The bout would have been one sided.)

I don't know if I see Stewart winning some of the matches hilighted in red... Even a game Biggs who beat undefeated Rudolpho Marin right before giving Riddick Bowe a good match in the fall of 1990, might have been a tough one for Stewart, though I'd probably pick Alex late. Garcia wouldn't have been a slouch either. Stewart needed better management outside the ring to improve his skills. As for starter opponents, Broad, Tillis, Bey, Snipes and on the right night, Biggs were more his speed.

I was working on momentum making Stewart a better fighter, as he avoided the tough war with Holyfield and the Tyson blow out.

Stewart always had confidence issues, so had to be managed properly. Most of the dates of the fights, were when the opponent was past his sell by date, or about to lose a big fight.

    Broad was gone by 89.

Dokes had not got over Holyfield, and was about to blown away by Ruddock.

Biggs had seen better days, but was still capable of lasting a few rounds.

Seldon was overrated and had shown cracks against Ribalta, he was ripe for defeat; Morrison was blowing the Mercer bout.

Cooper was coming off of the Holyfield loss, so a Stewart win looks good.

Ruddock (with hindsight) was grossly overrated going into the Lewis bout, and I think with the resume I had built up for him, it would of been possible for Stewart to catch Ruddock early ala Lewis.

I then see a safety first performance by Lewis, as he easily outboxes Stewart.

was never that impressed by stewart to be honest. he was brave and moderatley talented but lacked speed of hand and, despite his high KO % ,was not that big a puncher. i give garcia a 50/50 chance of getting a win against stewart

Neither of them can win and hold the title Tyson had all the legit Titles. Late 1989early 1990 when they would have earned a title shot at the earliest they would still not have been able to beat Tyson.
