Let's create a "fight prediction thread" for the Classic Forum

    This is LOOOOOONG overdue.

    I don't have time to run/moderate it myself, but I highly recommend that we set up a thread like this in the Classic forum:

    We spend a LOT of time debating hypothetical matchups here. Unsurprisingly, we also disagree a lot about what good "evidence" for a pick is. Some complain about boxrec-surfing. Others complain about too much Youtube evidence. And so on...

    A prediction thread would allow us to test our matchup-picking methods against reality. We could figure out which methods work best and which don't. I think that it would improve our objectivity enormously, give us insight into tricky matchups from the past ("Who wins: Liston or Lewis?"), and it would also be a lot of fun.

    So I recommend:

    1) Somebody start a "Classic ESB Prediction League" thread, complete with upcoming fights and a ranking table similar to Rummy's model.

    2) A moderator should then sticky it.

    3) Start predicting. Preferably, post your methods--i.e. how you arrived at your conclusion. Try to elaborate more than just "instinct".

    It's a great idea; here's the problem:

    Sometimes I spend three weeks with nothing but modern boxing. Other times I spend a week learning about nothing but Joe Gans. A lot of the other guys are much,much worse and we have plenty of "senior" members for want of a better word who have only a very limited interest in modern boxing. What any organiser (not me) will end up with is partial participation - I think there are maybe 5 guys on here that I can think off that were seriously inerested in Montiel-Hasegawa...and that was a huge fight.

    It makes the setting up and running of any thread very difficult for whoever runs it.

    Its a great idea ... let's see how theory applies in reality ... there are many people, myself included, that only visit classic on this site ... :good

    I've heard rumors...

    Some revisionist historians argue that it continued into the early 90's with Corbett, Fitzsimmons, and Jackson.
