Can you change "Duran" in the title to "Tokyo Douglas", Stone? I'm going to assume that's what you meant, anyway.

Arcel when asked what his impressions were of a young Duran he said "I thought he was the closest thing to Jack Dempsey." Lots of truth in that statement. I watch Duran all through his career and especially as a light weight where he was at his best. He was a tireless puncher with one punch ko power in each fist. Very tricky with his feints, bobbing and weaving and slipping punches constantly. I find it difficult to imagine anyone beating him at his best in this division.

Duran was certainly a complete fighter. I think you can make a case for some other fighters as well.

The thing that stands out to me about Duran is the way he integrated his offense with his defense so smoothly. Other boxers can do this when their maybe moving and on the retreat but Duran was able to come forward apply pressure yet maintaining that head movement. He rolled with punches so well.

Without that defense Duran doesn`t win the Welterweight, Jr. Middleweight or Middleweight Titles. He could overpower most contenders as a lightweight with is natural strength but at the higher divisions he needed that finesse.

Very good post. That's on full display on the Palomino fight. His feints and ability to roll with punches while not backing up was amazing.

Duran was the man. The best fighter we have extensive footage of.

Duran's fights with Palomino and Dejesus (third fight) are amazing to watch. His offense/defense transitions were very fluid. I have seen TONS of technical masters on film and I cannot say for certain that any of them were more complete than Duran.

I love a thread on Duran, it is tireless. A lot of people forget that everything he did post lightweight was a bonus. No shame in losing a competitive bout to Hagler (top 2 mw ever, maybe 1) or being taken out by Hearns (Duran never trained right, Hearns was exceptional and stylistacally all wrong for Roberto).

Quite simply I place Duran top 5 p4p boxer of all time.

Duran's completeness as a fighter and sensational defensive skills (taking into account his style, dude wasn't a runner or pure boxer) were never fully recognised thru his peak period. Amazing fighter.
