Well considering there is film of prime Dempsey and prime Marciano, I don't see why we should simply take their word. Plenty of experts say stuff that I don't agree with regarding who was better.

For example, Bert Sugar claimed that Carnera would've beaten both Klitschkos. I strongly disagree.

It should also be mentioned that Dempsey admitted that Marciano punched harder than he did. Marciano had true 1 punch, lights out power. Dempsey tended to bounce guys off of the canvas, like Tyson and Foreman did. Very, very few fighters had the type of punch where a single shot would knock someone unconcious for well over a minute.

Dempsey was not one of those few.

Burt's entire argument is... Hey, this person and that person said Marciano was the best.. thus he was the best. That isn't solid proof.. that is simply conjecture and relative to their preference and inherient bias (whatever that may be). The leading scientists and scholars of the day said the earth was the center of the universe.. They repeated said belief for longer than these guys have been screaming hyperbole for Dempsey. Did that make them right?

K, if what hundreds of boxing writers who said Dempsey would have beaten Marciano is by your terms "conjecture" ,and relative "bias", in what category is YOUR eminent opinion 7 decades later in ? REMEMBER there is NO SOLID PROOF, but I will take the opinions of people who saw these two fighters in the flesh over your opinion anytime...I have no PROOF that a Ray Robinson who I saw many times as a welterweight, would lick a Floyd Mayweather H2H...Am I using hyperbole, or nostalgia picking Robinson , though it is in your eyes "conjecture".?...If 50,000 boxing experts chose fighter A to beat fighter B, and a small amount chose fighter B to beat fighter A, put me in with the vast majority who chose Dempsey to have the style and speed to beat a Rocky Marciano...Styles make fights and the experts chose the faster punching Dempsey to explode in close on the
wilder swinging Marciano, and so do I...

There is footage of prime Dempsey and in all honesty Marciano strikes me as the better fighter and is more impressive. I also say Marciano hits harder because when he hit flush he had his man out of there in 1 or 2 punches. Out completely cold. This over ranked fighters/champions like Layne, Mattews, Walcott x2, Moore, Louis etc. Dempsey despite having smaller gloves, no mouthguards and being allowed to stand over and hit a downed opponent as soon as he was up still needed multiple knockdowns to seal the deal. This against inferior opposition. Dempsey's speed will prove troublesome to Marciano and he may well get decked a few times but I think ultimatley the better man will prevail.
