Ah...totally forgot about Ottke, Ward and Marsh, Terry completely fell off my radar because if I am not mistaken, he really only defended his title one time?....Valero didn’t exactly retire. But good call on the rest of them.
No question as he’s one of the old brigade that nobody ever questions about wether he could of competed with the modern era guys, what footage there is of him training and in the ring despite being old footage shows the skill and speed so he really must of been something else to see live. Joe Calzaghe I remember being introduced to him when he beat Chris Eubank who I just thought was a machine at the time,I was baby sitting for someone and couldn’t believe what I was seeing as I’d never heard of him. Despite his record you have to say his lack of power puts him underneath real top class, elite standard,I’m thinking Sugar Ray Leonard who had such speed and power, primo Roy Jones and Sugar Ray Robinson. Can’t put Floyd in there as for such a fine boxer his ring generalship ended up in him slinking along the ropes too much and reacting to his opponents.
Totally agree,I ain’t questioning his record but to be considered great you have to be able to hurt the opponents,Andre Ward is another who slapped, used the wrist(lacing I think they call it)basically it has no place in a boxing ring. Did you see Eubank jnr doing his Ward impression the other day?no wonder he got cut he was ducking below the waist just like Ward does and coming up with the head but Groves managed him well,he even had the Ref onside like Ward lol.
Negitive! Ward was better! He beat a far better caliber of opponent, moved up to 175 and beat a far better opponent there as well. Ward>Calzaghe.
What does Ward's 175 run have to do with his SMW one? Calzaghes SMW run is better and he managed to beat top fighters without using his head as a battering ram.
Yes, Marsh had one defense then retired. Not sure why. Maybe it was to plan Frank Warren’s assassination. That was before Mike Tyson held Frank by his ankles out a hotel window, the poor man.
Wards run at 175 further demonstrates his superiority over Calz. So, not only was Ward better than Calz at 168, but 175 as well. I say Ward was better than Calz, yesterday, tomorrow and forever!
one of the best at supermiddlweight. I think he proved more than Andre Ward, whom I respect, but Joe did more.
Calzaghe is the superior SMW(However I won't argue that Ward achieved more at LHW) Has a much longer run at the weight and was able to beat their best mutual win without resorting to disgraceful billy goat ramming.
Speaking of low blows.... How about Hopkins taking a page from the Ruiz playbook because he couldn't handle the pace Calzaghe set and needed a breather?
Which is what Ward did repeatedly against Kessler. I don't know why the California Boxing Commission didn't go the whole hog and make Ward wear a boxing glove on his head.
