Selby vs Simpson was a horrible promotion. Hardcores didn't know what channel it would be on and if it was even going through. The stable is more than strong enough to put a number of domestic title fights and prospects. Chisora, Sexton, Olubamiwo, Cleverly, Bellew, Maccarinelli, DeGale, Groves, Smith, Saunders, Cox, Hall, O'Meara, Gavin, Smith, Heffron, Skeete, Woodhouse, Burns, Murray, Mitchell, Ormond, Morgan, Byrne, Appleby, Walsh, Selby, Smith, Simpson, Walsh, Walsh and Broadhurst. That is all their top fighters from their rosters. Given that all these guys should be fighting at least 2 to 4 times a year it is kind of shocking that they don't have a good domestic fight card on every week. They have a ton of champs and ticket sellers. Queensbury Promotions will also have their own roster and they are Franks sons so obviously all their cards will be on Box Nation. Shock, Queensbury website doesn't work. Franks the top promoter in the UK. He knows what needs to be done to make a card each week. The UFC keep doing more and mroe cards and on a much bigger scale. Frank literally needs a few venues around the country and keeps filling them out. York Hall sells out easily, put a Walsh brother in the main or co-main and you are good to go. Find a good Liverpool average size venue, put the Smiths on and you are good to go.
Setanta paid way over the odds for Premier League coverage. You're right that we wanted a boxing channel for years then as soon as we got one the complaints started.
i agree with o.p im gl;ad its here and even though we have been let down a bit so far,its still been worth the 10 er. cotto was that alone. maybe ufc,mma etc would help subscriptions. im not a fan but theres plenty of space to fit it in. and if it helps keep the channel going then its ok by me. wouldnt advertising bring them more cash in??
Knew it wouldnt work and I'm glad it's failing. Nobody wants to pay for boxing on tv anymore if it's going to be crap. Frank ****** needs to accept this. It's partly his fault PPV is a non starter these days so he's got nobody to blame but himself.
This. The majority of their domestic cards, especially on a Friday night have been absolutely abysmal. Instead of turning one passable Sky Fight Night card in to three or four dog turd shows, just turn them in to one. It seems odd saying this for a 24/7 boxing channel-but sometimes less is more. As a bit of a dole dosser, I've got the time to sit and watch most of the rubbish they have churned out. But if I had a job, then I can't think of many worse ways to spend a Friday night than sitting through shitty main events and random kids I have never heard of being took four rounds by journeymen. I understand and agree that these fights are important for development, but there is a reason nobody else shows them. They aren't TV-friendly fights and make people turn off. I'd rather watch these quirky cards from Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico etc. like the New Years' Eve card. That looks ace, why aren't they showing it?atsch After all that moaning, my MAIN gripe is the lack of extra support programming. They haven't even bothered to try anything remotely interesting or different. Sure, they brought the Bunce Hour back (which isn't half as good these days) but that is it. Three months in and they are just repeating the same fights over and over again. I made a blog post/thread on this topic a while back (here) and barring fancy documentaries, nothing there would break the bank to spend. If they weren't controlled by a certain vulture, I would be wishing them all the best. As such, I am a bit indifferent. A boxing channel could be great, and should be great. But spade a spade, BoxNation isn't.
Scottish, NI, Welsh, Northen, Southern, Midlands and Central Area titles. British, English and Celtic. Commonwealth and European. There are more than enough titles for his stable to be fighting for. The WBU is not needed and was only used to protect fighters. There are a ridiculous number of venues - small like York Hall, medium like Ally Pally and large like the O2. Frank is the best promoter in the country with a wealth of experience. It is his job to juggle everything i.e. DeGale fights at the O2 but then the Ally Pally to keep busy. I don't know the truth behind the money problems. If it is true then it is self inflicted. BoxNation and Queensbury Promotions can't even get a website up and running smoothly. That is so poor. A website in this day and age is mandatory. My old barber has a decent looking website! The infrastructure on all fronts is there but there are too many holes in the process and its suprising from the countries biggest promoter.
Rather suprising. Sky get the fans involved to commentate. Get a fan, give him a camera and get him access to one training session of any top fighter. You've immediately got a 30 minute amateur show which we could see some training and get a few laughs. I bet I could find 5 aspiring guys on ESB who would be interested in doing something like that and it would be cheap as chips. No one available to film a 30 minute weigh in? Can't get Bunce or Kerr to put to do a single documentary on anyone! I'd love to know who is heading this operation. Who is running the office, picking the projects etc
Tongue cheek approach is fine. Sky get 2 fans to commentate on a game and they are sitting in a room with a backboard. It can be a laugh. Plus this is boxing where most of us get our info from amateur videos on youtube. No one complains then.
We've done the boxnation thing to death now - which says a lot in itself. All I hope is Bunce and some of the top brass are reading peoples comment, because many have valid points. I signed up as I want to see it work, which I think is the reason a number of others did the same. So far it has been disappointing and very amateur. Bunce has been on here critical of Sky, but it says a lot when a 'Sports' channel rather than a 'Boxing' channel does boxing better than the boxing channel does. Weigh ins, build up etc - it's all about the package and the quality. The old school will say 'it's just about the boxing' - that's very naive.
