Bump for the card tomorrow! No one is saying it is a great fight--but it should be on record that Itauma, Miller and Hrgovic turned him down, Yoka pulled out, and Joyce was rejected by the WBA. Peter Kadiru is the best he could get in two weeks, and I am still happy to see him healthy and wearing the WBA belt to the ring.
Congratulations on his first title defense--such as it was. I am not above celebrating small victories myself.
I doubt Hrgovic or even Miller would have turned down Gassiev unless Gassiev's team made an unfair offer. The idea that people are scared of the dude who lost to Otto Wallin is comical.
Any of them could have had this fight. What is more, again and again and again, it is a matter of public record that Itauma's people, including Turkyi, wanted the WBA regular when it was Pulev. When Gassiev got the fight, Warren threatened to sue. When Gassiev got hold of the title--complete silence and Itauma's camp didn't answer the calls. You can do with that what you will, but the documented history is that they swerved him. There are opinions and there are facts, and you can look this all up for yourself. I followed it in real time. So let's see if they sign, now.
He didn't lose really. He had a very off night and still scored the more damaging punches. I hate excuses usually but apparently Gassiev had a lot of problems before the fight. And I'd believe this one because he was seriously rusty and not his usual self. Off nights happen to all boxers, especially at heavyweight. Gassiev would almost certainly destroy Wallin a rematch.
The problem with that being it's the only fight of note since Usyk that we really have to gauge where Gassiev stands. That Usyk fight was 8 years ago. That fight is more valuable than any of the journeyman hes smashed or Pulev or Kadiru in terms of gauging where he stands in the division competitively.
It was a split decision! So it's hardly an outlandish opinion. And the 2 judges for Wallin had it close too just 7-5. All of Russian boxing media called it a robbery. It was whether you liked Gassievs aggression and more powerful shots or Wallins tippy tappy running on the backfoot. The same people who claim Wallin won will ironically probably say Hughie Fury was on the backfoot too much and didn't land enough meaningful, aggressive punches to win decisively against Joseph Parker. If you thought Wallin beat Gassiev, you should definitely think Hughie Fury beat Parker.
I've tried to erase the Fury Parker match from my mind He lost, it happens but to say he didn't really lose is a bit daft
I think his fluent and effortless combination punching and his relaxed punching technique is a thing of beauty. If he can get his opponents to stay in range. Why so little investment into footwork I wonder.
