look, i dont want to get into the "canelo kills ggg" or "ggg ****s canelo" flame war.

what i want to talk about is, who is middleweight champion. cotto was lineal champion......then refused to fight at middleweight. now canelo has the lineal distinction......and now he refuses to fight at 160.

how do we deal with this? doesnt this automatically vacate the title??

can we allow fighters to dictate the rules of boxing? i mean, what is next?? think about it: a fighter wins a lineal belt......then refuses to ever fight 12 rounds again. instead he insists on only fighting 4 rounds. etc.

Canelo fights once at MW and wins a belt at a catchweight from a welterweight. How can he have any claim over GGG?

    This isnt even a debate.

Canelo is the middleweight champion until he gets beat at the weight, leaves the weight class or retires. Period, end of...

    Canelo is the champion.

I don't understand why this is so hard.

You have GOOD champions. And you have BAD champions.

Cotto was a BAD champion, becuase he didn't fight GGG.

GGG is the best fighter of his weight in the world but is NOT champion.

It remains to be seen what kind of champion Canelo is.

The championship was won in the ring by Canelo. 160 lbs is not the requirement to compete at the weight, it is the weight limit.

GGG has to jump thru many hoops to get the fight. It's a dirty game, but that's the way it is. GGG can obtain all the titles, but unless he beats Canelo to take the lineage, and Ring titles, or estahlishes a new one, the champion is Canelo.

Make no mistake, I am no fan of catchweights, and contractual weight limits, etc. but that is s separate issue.

GGG has championship belts and is obviously the best middleweight out there so he is the true middleweight champ. Recently Saunders who is fighting Andy Lee for his version of the championship belt admits he won't ever fight Golovkin as he is much too good. Pretty much sums up who is the true middleweight champ. This lineal stuff is ****.

The problem with the lineal title is that there are no mandatories for it and hard to get stripped of. You win it and you can fight bums for the rest of your career and still be considered lineal.

I totally agree with that but he has left the weight division. Cotto and Canelo are fighters from the 154 category. It unfortunately totally ******s up lineage. Cotto fought inside the junior-middleweight limit, Canelo one pound over, the fight for one was non-title. One minute people want to hate the ABCs, next up they want to harness the fight as part of lineage. If you don't recognise GGG, then the lineal situation is vacant.

Hold it right there cowboy… when has Canelo refused to fight at 160??? Canelo is a 154 lb fighter, he has never fought at 160 in his life!

Cotto was the one who asked for Catchweights vs Middleweights, NOT Canelo!! So get your facts straight! Don’t blame Canelo for Cotto’s Middleweight negotiations!! What Cotto did draining Middleweights like Geale Canelo has not done!

And if you are so outraged by what Cotto did with the MW title, then where is our outrage for Floyd draining Canelo, when (unlike Canelo at 160) Floyd had already fought and won a title (vs Cotto) at 154.

It’s like your taking the worst stuff that Pac did (draining Cotto) Floyd did (draining Canelo) and Cotto did (draining Middleweights) and saying that’s what Canelo did. Canelo has only been Middleweight Champ for one day and when asked yesterday said he is very happy to fight GGG...BUT now you have to give Canelo the same respect that you gave Floyd. Now it’s Canelo’s time. If you hate what Floyd did to Canelo and you hate what Pac did to Cotto and you hate what Cotto did at Middleweight, then don’t assume Canelo will do that baloney stuff. Unlike Pac, Floyd, and Cotto and other fighters who needed catchweights, Canelo is NOT like that. Canelo wants to fight GGG, but he ALSO has business at 154 where he has fought.

He deserves the right to re-capture the 154-lb titles. Canelo needs time to grow into a full fledged Middleweight. One day we will see the Fight of Our lives Canelo vs GGG, but before that Canelo needs to re-establish himself as “The Man” at 154-lb. Doing that will only bring more titles to the GGG fight and will only make Canelo vs GGG at 160 bigger and bigger!

Fighters like Mayweather and Cotto have already dictate the rules of boxing for years! Canelo hasn’t done any of that stuff to anyone. You should be criticizing Floyd and Cotto for what they did and praising Canelo for not needing to do that kind of un-even negotiations to win big fights.

    Agreed.

However, if the WBC mandates that Canelo fight GGG at Middleweight (and apparently they already have), and if Canelo refuses, he could be stripped of his title.

Well I think we need consistency from the commissions. Didn’t Floyd Maywaether say he wanted everyone to be “on an even playing field”? How is it fair for Floyd to not have to ever defend those 154-lb titles for 2 years and not get stripped but then Canelo has to fight GGG next or get stripped?

All fighters should be treated the same by the commissions. If Floyd is allowed to hold TWO 154-lb titles for 2 years and not be mandated to defend them, then Canelo should be allowed to hold ONE 160-lb title for 2 years without having to defend them.

Fair is fair, otherwise Mayweather is getting advantages that other fighters are not getting. That’s not “an even playing field” like Floyd Mayweather said he wanted to see in boxing.
