Yeah, tha's nice... fact is he was never that good a fighter to begin with and was very fortunate to get all those so-called "close decisions' his way. His talent was never accompanied by world class skill and once that new car smell wore off him and we saw Taylor in against better competition that all became glaringly evident. As a result he had tough fights with the likes of Wrght, Abraham, Hopkins, Pavlik, Froch, and even little ol' Kassim Ouma managed to rough his ass up some.... the result being a damn near done fighter by the age of 31. He was both lucky and unlucky to get the opportunities he's gotten in his career. Lucky because he'd made millions in a sport where most make peanuts. Unlucky in that he's paid for it with his physical well-being.
Jermain used to be an outstanding counter puncher. In the 2nd fight with KP he rendered Pav's trademark double-jab useless with right hand counters, and that is no easy task. What about the lead right? Arthur is a sitting ****ing duck for a lead rights, and JT used to have one of the best lead rights in the business. We never saw it in his last fight! These are the type of things that lead me to believe JT may be gone beyond recall.
Fighters can be great without world class skill. Fact is that Jermain lost his hunger. Fighting Hopkins twice, Winky Wright, AA, Pavlik 2 its not a shame to come away with losses. He fought a prime Pavlik, very live Wright, Prime Froch and Abraham.
hire bhop as a trainer. he's never been knocked out, was only hurt in one fight in his whole career, and almost knock taylor out in the first fight despite a low volume of punches. he could also teach taylor some ring smarts and how to use his physical advantages.
He might've lost his hunger at some point, but that was never the problem as he admitted a long time ago that he was never passionate about tha sport to begin with. His problem was his lack of skills and many flaws that were exploited every time he got into the ring once he got to the championship level. After those controversial fights against Hopkins, where he should've lost at least one IMO, he benefited from fighting smaller opposition that he barely squeaked by... and finally when he again faced an opponent more his size in Kelly Pavlik, he was demolished and dethroned. Like I said, Taylor was never that good a fighter to begin with and ever since the losses to Pavlik he's gotten progressively worse and more beaten up and worn down in the process. I'm sorry, but if this guys isn't completely done by now he will be very soon and hopefully it doesn't take severe brain damage for he and his blind fans to realize that.
I'm not saying he is "great" or should even fight on. I think Taylor was a very good fighter, he has quality wins over tough opponents and all of his fights were competitive. All of his losses came against prime fighters and none of them had a defeat at the time he fought them.
Fair enough... and really, I'm through with this Taylor bashing. I've done enough of it over the years. I just want his diehard fans to realize that the old chap has been getting hurt, and hurtly badly in recent fights and rather than cling to a dream that will never come to just let the poor ******* ride off into the sunset and enjoy his millions. Better that than ending up in an emergency room or in a coffin.
I'm pretty sure that if his next fight was against someone like Kessler, he probably would have pulled out of the tournament. I respect Taylor a lot and do not want to see him get hurt. The way he was knocked out from Abraham had me scared for a moment when his right hand was stuck in the air. He needs to finish this tournament if he can than retire and relax in Arkansas.
Jermain doesn't know it, but his worst enemy is Ozell Nelson. It was Nelson who instigated the split with Pat Burns, and that was the beginning of the end. However, a come back is not completely out of the question. There was a time when public perception of the guy in my avatar was that he was shot to ****, never that good to start with . . . . blah, blah, blah. He went on to become WBC featherweight champ, and rule the division until Salvador Sanchez came along. He was inducted into the IBHOF this year. So, ya, we can dream.
My main concern with Jermain Taylor is that if he loses on his next fight, and especially if he gets knocked out, that he will never regain his confidence. Not too many people can recover their career from such steep declines. I can only think of Arturo Gatti, from more recent fighters, that have had the will to turn their careers around after so many losses at the world stage, and at an age where some boxers are thinking of retirement. However, Arturo Gatti had the heart despite his technical boxing deficiencies. He got a new coach in Buddy McGirt, and learned a new style of boxing. Whether this is the course that Jermain should follow, I don't know, but I think he can slowly and smartly recover his career, and put himself back on par with the other elite boxers. I do believe that Jermain should take some time out, or at the very least fight lower rank fighters until he regains his confidence and builds himself a more effective style of boxing.
I love Taylor, he consistently takes on top opposition and doesn't duck anyone unlike other fighters, but he looks done now.
We can help him by giving him some of the stamina that I keep in my back ****in' pocket. He can help himself by not telegraphing all his punches and learning some defense!!!
He should not drop of the tournament because he can win his next fight against Ward. Also, if he drops out and keeps fighting his paydays will be very low compared to what he can get in the tourney.
