We all know that Sky's boxing coverage is pretty poor in comparison to other sports. Here's a few ideas to improve it. 1) Sack Nick Halling. The guy hasn't improved and still sounds like he'd be better off doing cricket or golf. Him trying to sound like a 'geezer' is a lyrical car crash. Get rid and approach Mike Costello or Ian Darke. 2) Stop trying to tell us that every show the week previous was fantastic. Case in point this week, with Smith and Nelson trying to put gold paint on the heap of rust that was Mayweather vs Pacquiao. Just say it was a flop and stop embarrassing yourselves! 3) Shake up the punditry team. No more Carl Froch. EVER. Glen McCrory should also go on a permanent holiday. Johnny Nelson will never be an anchor man, stop having him do that job. A lot more of the two Garys, Logan and Lockett, would also be welcome.
think the level of fights are a bigger problem, as the case with the brum card this Saturday, AJ, Macklin, Campbell treble gets you 3.50 profit on a £100 quid. need to get better fights first, then sky and whoever the pundits are won't have to try and make shyte cards sound good like paul smith and macklin as pundits actually, and think they'll end up on the sky team in a few years.
froch as been great on sky i hqve had ufc fans telling me how funny it is he will never let george forget that knock out , the same way first time round george would not let carl forget he dropped him , thing is one far out weighs the other lol george , i cant think of one good thing you do well froch , george groves is famous for getting knocked out in front of 80,000 fans froch made george famous
Good post but cannot stand Paul Smith. The cards need to be improved by Sky s****ping the solo promoter deal with Hearn and getting regular weekly boxing back on Sky.
Think Johnny Nelson is very good in my opinion, Halling is average, Watt is terrible, I disagree with Gary Lockett I think he is poor, Froch is a poor pundit, Haye and Paul Smith are two of my personal favourites as pundits, this will get me some abuse but I don't mind Bellew in there either.
The coverage was far better when Paul Dempsey was the presenter and Ian Darke the main commentator. Dempsey as seen on BT will give reasoned opinions, good questions rather than not looking to upset anyone like Smith.Ian Darke always a good natural commentator.Halling looks like he is winging it hence the cliched commentary.
Too true the shows Hull,Newcastle,Leeds etc awful this year. The headline fight should be just that.I have no problem with young talent being showcased but 4 hour shows with no 60-40 fights let alone 50-50 really doesn't help. Having only one promoter with an exclusive deal means no competition to produce the type of cards that the hardcore fan wants to see.
The bloke from Channel Five or the reporter from Ringside are both far better than Halling. As for the cards- I'd set a formula such as one "showcase" bout (in other words a star against a lesser opponent), one British level 50/50 and an area level 50/50. All other lesser bouts can be used as floats not live. This would keep cards fresh and at least give the fans competitive bouts. Four times a year have events with a higher level of title fight 50/50s (such as Smith vs. Fielding) as specials. Restrict PPVs to two a year with genuine marquee fights. Six/seven mismatches is no way to sell a card/PPV. Also allowing purse bids to be public would stop promoters from doing PPV "on the cheap" so to speak.
We need more domestic matches, not Campbell fighting numerous journeymen. Fights like Blackwell vs Ryder should be the fights we see on regular sky, it shouldn't be deep down on a ppv card.
