Let's just get rid of boxing and replace it with tag and slap

Let's just call it game of "tag", "slap boxing" or even "touch boxing".

    That's what's winning fights and "pound-for-pound" greatness !

I mean, it got to the point last night where I was wishing for Calzaghe to land some GOOD slaps, since most of his "punches" :)lol:) weren't even half-slaps, they were mere brushes, a bit of light petting. He was hitting thin air a lot. And a lot of what he was throwing wouldn't have hurt Zeta-Jones, nevermind Roy Jones. ****, he wouldn't have smudged her make-up with those light touches.

Hopkins held more than he punched. He's clever but he uses bum tactics. I HATE his style and his cheating bull**** tactics, but I thought he edged the fight simply because he landed SOME nice quality snappy counters. Not many, but some. He definitely landed most of the real punches, and the best ones among them.

But I guess punching isn't important any more in modern boxing. Sorry, I'm from the old school when professional boxers used to try to land actual PUNCHES, and generally got credited for doing so. Soft taps that lightly brush against your opponent's scalp never used to count for anything, and they shouldn't.

But nowadays "boxing fans" will likely score them AND the stupid idiots who operate "compubox" will register such ineffective inoffensive "blows" as "power-punches" !

Seriously, this sport has gone to ****, and I'm not talking about the decision. **** Hopkins and his shitty tactics. Yes, I thought he deserved it more than Calzaghe, but he didn't really deserve it either with all his bum tactics. It's not that Calzaghe "won" that baffles me, it's the amount of people here who actually think he did good last night. Calzaghe was utter ****, he should be ashamed of throwing such girly "punches". As a boxing fan, I'd cringe seeing a drunken fool in the street throwing some of those "flurries", let alone a world champion.

Calzaghe barely hit him. Oh, he touched him a lot, touch him gently.

This was worse than the Mayweather-De La Hoya "fight" that resembled ballroom dancing.

These guys get paid big money, HUGE money, and the fans and judges eat it up and award all the praise on a guy who's hitting like a girl.
Ineffective "aggression" :)lol) and such lame "punches" should count for NOTHING.

I agree with your post. Hopkins didnt do much but he was connecting with more meaningful punches. Even if only a couple per round, it was still more than calzaghe. Most of his punches hit on the gloves or hopkins shoulder. The way calzaghe boxes is cheap, making an illusion that he is dominating by flurries of slaps. Too bad only one judge saw that right.

IF all Calzaghe is caple of is slapping then Bernard should be ashamed of himself for not standing in the pocket and knocking him out... So should his 44 other victims.

I'm watching this stinker as we speak, and so far it's hard to disagree with you. On a related note, yesterday I was watching Mayweather vs. Chavez again and it baffled me what a guy like Lederman calls "effective aggression". For ****s sake he got credited for walking into punches, what the **** do you mean effective.

No, we should probably get rid of both. This "fight" probably doesn't deserve a post-fight discussion.

If you think I'm bitching and moaning, YES, you're at least half right.
Boxing is **** nowadays. That saddens me because I remember when it was great. I like to moan about that.

Sonny's jab, The more I read your posts the more I agree. This fight was bull****. It just pisses me off that JUDGES are giving credit for these love taps.:? Based on this, a guy can flail and flop his arms around for 12 rounds (doesn't matter if you hit or not) and still get a SD. Are the judges allowed to drink during the fight???:think B/c two of them were clearly drunk.:deal

Joe Calzaghe, the undisputed super-middleweight and light-heavyweight champion of the world. Has a nice ring to it, wouldn't you agree?

I agree... I've just watched it for a second time...

If you want a good example of how Calzaghe could throw 7 slaps to Hopkins 1 punch and the net result in terms of punches landed would be 1-0 for Hopkins, WATCH the replay during the break between round 7 and 8, it really tells the story of the fight.

All I've seen Calzaghe land in terms of real punches was 3 straight lefts after round 6. Before round 6, Calzaghe did not land a single REAL punch.

I had scored the fight 114-113 on fight night. Now I've watched it again and I've scored it 115-112 for Hopkins, and I've been nice to Calzaghe, acknowledging sheer activity.

What's the problem? I think pro boxing is starting to be judged like amateur boxing... Compubox doesn't help, making people think in terms of quantity instead of quality... you notice that guys with extensive amateur careers feel they win fights without landing much effective punches (e.g. Taylor vs. Nard twice, Calzaghe yesterday).. on the other hand, guys like Bernard Hopkins and James Toney, who have basically no amateur pedigree, will emphasize how they landed clean effective punches.

Pro boxing is becoming touch boxing.

This is a fair point. I don't think anyone is trying to say Joe isn't capable of putting some power into his punches (when he actually throws them), but it's obvious he does those DLH-esqe flurries to win the judges over. They showed a slow mo replay of one of these flurries sometime between rounds, and while it looked semi-impressive during the actual fight and the crowd was loving it, in the replay it was obvious as could be that none of the punches -- if you want to call them that -- were landing. Those literally were slaps.
