Pathetic, give the man his dues. He probably isnt a top 30 ATG, but has to be somewhere between 30-100, anywhere in that area is acceptable imo. He has fantastic skills, and was trained by his 5 ft 7 dad his whole career in a 2 roomed crappy little gym. His skills are some of the most unique i have ever seen. When his hands became fragile he adapted to it like a true champion later on in his career, even if some flurries appear "slappy". Look at him fight and there really is only one JC. Thats why many people he's fought including B Hop says hes so difficult to fight, because he has a bizarre and amazing effective style.

oe Calzaghe at his best was a great, great fighter. In his prime he had it all. Great footwork, workrate, good power in both hands, and was better at ad******g in ring than anyone in the sport at the time.

Whats crap is, the first Calzaghe fight a lot of people saw was the fight against Lacy. They saw a Joe Calzaghe who hurt his hands so much he could never squeeze all the way through his punches. Gone were the days of knocking people out. He completely over hauled his style and was still kicking some serious ass.

The fact that when Joe lost the power in his hands he still beat Bernard Hopkins and Kessler is a credit to how good Joe really is.

Also, the guy who said Calzaghe is probably still in his prime because he never fought anyone is a ****ing idiot.

 

That's basically an accurate assessment.

It will be disliked on ESB but that is because of the demographics (you just have to ask yourself what is the primary background of the people POSTING about their favorite boxers (in English as well) - it isn't a diverse group and certainly doesn't include a great number of athletes - but to be fair, it isn't any different than if you had an internet board consisting solely of Filipinos (for example) and they were rating Pac. It is always gonna produce skewed results and extremism. ESB always rates certain fighters (Klitschko, Calzaghe, etc.) WAY higher than any reasonable impartial student of the game or ex-athlete would. Every group wants and needs their heroes. It is consisent and not a surprise. That said, Joe was a decent fighter who was fortunate to get a close decision over a past peak Eubank and then never fought any one as decent as that version of Eubank for about a decade. There is no mystery about what that says. He was easy to hit then and would have been troubled by dozens upon dozens of fighters that are rated below him on ESB. He would have never gotten to his mid-thirties in pristine condition if he would have had to face Eubank level fighters and better over the majority of his career. As such, his career is a bit of an illusion produced by careful and well-timed matchmaking. But he is a hero to his own and rightfully so (he did pull off a record that is nearly unparalleled). No one can say Joe wasn't a smart guy (or maybe smarter than most fighters).

This thread sucks. But anyway, just about any **** should know he had recurring hand problems stemming back to a break in a bought prior to the televised arse **** of Jeff Lacy. His hands were deteriorating by the Hopkins and Jones fights and he was most definately past prime.
Yes his record was padded for a time, but he still beat top quality opposition and he's a far better fighter than you've made out.

Once again it is an American who presumes that because Calzaghe fought mainly in the UK even though HE was the champion, he was somehow protected and only fought Euro bums.

Yet many US champs never fight out of their own country
