Lets say the fight went down exactly the same, but 2 judges had Castillo winning 115-113. Floyd won the rematch, and his career continued exactly as it has. Would he be making close to as much money as he is now, and would he have been considered the best fighter on the planet from that fight to now? Would his legacy have somehow changed, although his performances did not? I'm just curious what you all think as far as how much one or two close rounds scored differently, would effect the perception of a fighter for his entire career.

He wasn't recognized as the pound for pound #1 even winning the two JLC fights. He really didn't become the universal number 1 until he sliced up Gatti and Hopkins lost to Taylor around the same time.

It would have been great for boxing. He wouldnt have spent his career petrified of losing that 0, and so possibly took on a lot harder fights

yes, a single L on your record doesn't mean rat **** if you win the rematch, then continue to dominate in the years to come, people take the record of fighters too seriously, the same with fighters, they are afraid to lose their 0, that's why potentially good fights go down the drain, he can have 5 L's on his record for all i care, if he's avenged the losses and he's the best fighter at the moment, i don't look at him in any other way than if he was undefeated

It would not have matter if he official lost the 1st Castillo fight. Did it matter for SRL, Ali, Tyson, ODLH when they lost?

Yes, everything would've played out the same including his current earnings. The marketability of the zero and Mayweather's attachment to it are largely the product of myth.

I think if he had lost that fight (and you can certainly make a case for Castillo winning, it was very close) then he might have been less cautious about the fights he took in the future.

Roy Jones spoke about that a while ago on The Gloves Are Off -- he said his goal was originally to be undefeated, but because of the DQ loss, he had to change his goal and chose to do other impressive things, so he wanted to win the light heavyweight title, then win the heavyweight title, and then regain the light heavyweight title. Now, Roy is obviously quite different to Floyd, but it's interesting to consider how Floyd would have reacted to a loss early in his career, even if he won the rematch, as Roy did.

I saw that and Roy Jones makes a good point. Floyd may not have gone as crazy as Jones did but he may have taken a few more risks if the 0 was no longer a factor.

Very good thread. In my opinion, he would have been more open to all challenges as he moved up without the need to protect that 0. As far as his legacy is concerned, it wouldn't have affected him much if anything it might have opened him up to take all fights necessary without any complications which means great for legacy more so than his wallet. In the end this is a business as it is a sport, if you have a beneficial factor you will use it to the max in a deadly sport like this to make as much money as possible. As Roy Jones Jr. said, when he had that 0 his main focus was to keep it for as long as possible and milk it, yet when he got DQ'd he was forced to move up and accomplish other things. In the end, these special fighters can accomplish insane feats when they know they have to.

I would have thought that Mayweather got the slight shaft in a close fight.

Not being undefeated changes everything, for the worse in terms of Mayweathers' personal legacy.

I think it might of even helped Floyd's legacy. Like Leonard before him, Floyd had a close, but clear loss to a worthy adversary and cameback a better fighter to best his conqueror. But with the gift it leaves an imppression he needed help from judges to win, tho perhaps Floyd might of beaten him 9 outta 10 times. That night belonged to Castillo.
