Cottto and Margraito are both loses waiting to happen. You have to question any Margarito win. However it could also have been Cotto's night to lose.
To answer your question yes Cotto became irrelevant after the loss. I also think he was and still is slightly overrated. I don't think he would be as highly regarded if he was the #1 in a division that Mayweather was not in. Basicly he was the false hope for the anti-Mayweather crowd. He has however taken steps to become relevant again. He is a big name so it was some what easier for him to get back than it would be for others.
Lets take a look at what Cotto has done so far since the Margrito.

Michael Jennings TKO 5 W WBO 147. It was nice of the WBO to make this a championship fight. However I don't see the justification for it. Did anyone really think Jeennings had a shot. A look at his record shows his best win came in 04 in an 8 round points win over Rafal Jackiewicz. This was a get back on the horse fight for Cotto.

Joshua Clottey SD 12. In this fight Both Cotto and Clottey were looking to take that step back into being relevant as both have losses to Margarito.
Clottey came into the fight on a five fight winning streak. In my opinion Cotto and Clottey are at the same level as each other. I conssider them very good but not great. Like Cotto Clottey is also a loss waiting to happen.

Manny Pacquiao LTKO 12 L WBO 147. Cotto got this fight because he's a big name and Pacquiao likes to play it safe. Pacquiao won because in this case he's the better boxer. No version of Cotto is going to beat Pacquiao or Mayweather. There just better boxers than he is.

Yuri Foreman TKO9 W WBA 154. This is his best win outside of his upset of Shane Mosley. A feet that if they were to rematch I do not think he woulld be able to repeat. With Cotto bing able to get championship fights after losses not once but twice in a two year span. I can understand why boxers go with Top Rank. On one hand I think Foreman gets underrated and that Cotto beat the better boxer. On the other hand it is clear from the first round that Foreman's leg was hurt. I think you have to give Cotto full credit for the win, but like Mosley if they rematched I'd pick Foreman to win.

    Julio Cesar Chavez Jr
This bout is scheduled for 12/4. It is a fight Cotto should win. However Chavez Jr. Is starting to improve. I don't think he will ever be as good as his father. Than again not many are.

If Cotto beats Chavez Jr. he will have taken another step towards being relevant. I think he will get another big name. I think the most like oppoent is going to be Alfredo Angulo assuming that Arum looks outside of Top Rank. A win over Angulo would make Cotto relevant again.

    Irrelevant?

That is the only way the Mayweather - Pac is going to happen.

If Pac demolishes Margarito, Mayweather would never ever utter Pac's name without quacking and quivering.

    Want to bet?

    A. If Pac wins, Mayweather fight will never happen.

    B. If Pac losses, Mayweather will find a way to justify the fight.
