    Dear Classic posters,

In an attempt to revive the "let's score a fight together" trend, here is one of the most controversial fights of all time, Kid Gavilan vs. Billy Graham.

Not only will this be a chance to discuss this infamous fight and discuss it amongst ourselves, but you'll also get a chance to see two fantastically skilled Hall of Famers at their peaks, in action against each other. A great action fight too BTW, very entertaining and dramatic, so you won't have to worry about being bored too. It will be well worth the watch.

dear My2Sense--Thanks for posting this wonderful fight. I just watched and scored it and I had Graham winning 9 rounds. Gavilan didn't even seem to have much left the last two rounds. I thought the difference was Graham's jab which snapped Gavilan's head back consistently. Gavilan's own jab did not seem very effective. As for the scoring, I can only guess the judges were very impressed by Gavilan's lefts to the body. I thought he landed very few effective power shots to the head while Graham got that right home steadily and also snuck in a left hook now and then. When Graham went to the body, you could hear the leather crack.

    My scoring--Graham (1,3,5,7,10,11,12,14,15)
    Gavilan (2,4,6,8,9,13)

    Graham wins 9 to 6.

    General comment---what great fighters!

Didn't watch the fight right now, but going off a card of mine in the past, I had Gavilan taking it by a point: 144-143

    I gave Graham rounds 9,11,12,13,14 and 15. I gave Gavilan rounds 1,2,3,4,6,7 and 8. I had rounds 5 and 10 even.

Whilst Billy showed a wonderfully tight and economic style, he was a little too gun shy in the first half of the bout and Gavilan's flurrying was winning him the rounds. Once Gavilan's pace died a little Billy got back into the fight but it was too little too late.

One of my favourite classic boxing matches this one, and as I've said in a previous thread concerning these two guys, they would make an absolute mockery of the current 'stacked' welterweight division.

Yes, numerous times. In fact, I've even seen an alternate version shown from a different angle.

Either way, I've always scored the fight for Gavilan by at least a 3-round margin. Graham just didn't let his hands go enough over the first two-thirds of the fight. Gavvy wasn't always particularly accurate with his punches, but he was often the only one working for long stretches. IMO Gavvy won rounds 1-4, 7, and 8 without question, and I give him the edge in rounds 5 and 9 as well. I don't think Graham clearly won a round until the championship rounds. I see the fight as being roughly 8-5-2 in rounds for Gavilan. So basically, I felt the judge who scored 9 rounds to 6 had it about right, and Graham was lucky to lose only by a split decision.

    Just a comment. Sweet-Scientist gave Gavilan 9 rounds, with Graham winning rounds 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15.

James P Dawson of the New York Times scored it 9 to 6 for Gavilan with Graham winning rounds 5, 6, 7, 12, 14, 15

    So two judges scoring 9 to 6 for Gavilan. However, one or the other gave Graham 9 rounds--5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15.

I think this shows how close the fight was and how hard to judge. Clearly, Graham could be seen as winning a sizable majority of rounds.

I am going to rewatch this when I get a chance, but one factor I noticed. Gavilan tended to take off the first two minutes of each round. Graham, in my judgement, outboxed him and so was scoring consistently with his jab. Gavilan would come on in the last minute and these late rushes seem to have given him rounds which I judged against him. I remember when Gavilan was active he was in a lot of controversial fights because of the split votes which these late flurries aroused. Many sportswriters felt he was "stealing" rounds by this technique with his strong late impression.

I actually gave Gavilan 7 rounds mate. Graham 6. With 2 rounds even.

I can't for the life of me figure out how everyone had this fight so close. Both times I've scored it I've given Gavilan at least 10 rounds. The other rounds, and the ones Graham won on my card, were much closer and more difficult to score than the ones Gavilan won outright as well. I thought it was a very competitive affair, with pretty much every round being so, but I just can't give Graham more than a few rounds considering how much busier Gavilan was. Graham didn't really get it going until the later rounds, and even then he held no distinct edges in my book (though he probably did the better work of the two in the last 5).

Either way it was close. I KNOW SS gave me the fight some were. I dig it up and rewatch it later.

I recall it being a close fight some were. Other controversial fight is the one with Carman. Galvian is always the winner in these close to call bouts for some odd reason.

Once again, I can't for the life of me figure out what everyone else is watching, and I've now seen the fight twice just to see if my memory was a bit shoddy or if I missed something from the first go-around.

Correct. Sorry. But between the two of you, Dawson or you gave Graham 9 rounds I think.

I will rewatch it again and see what I think. I have watched the first round, generally given to Gavilan, four times, and I throught Graham won it all four times. He scored three times with sharp rights and scored pretty consistently with the jab. Gavilan threw a great many punches in the last minute, but missed most of them, and, by the way, missed them badly, with Graham scoring with a sharp right near the bell.

I will watch the whole thing as again as soon as I can.

I just re-watched the first round for kicks. For the first two minutes I did have Graham ahead in that round due to the more effective work, but Gavilan's last minute surge was better than anything Graham had done up to and from that point IMO, as I didn't feel he held a significant edge in the first two minutes anyway. I gave the round to Gavilan, though it was closer than I remembered.

Looks like I'll have to watch it a third time at some point, from as unbiased a point of view as possible and see if my card changes.
